The Nellis Times

July 2011 The Month in Review

We started June with a successful Open House for new cadets. This is the rst me we will train a Tango class from start to nish using the Great Start Program. Lt Col Dinsmore provided us with Character Development training on the rst Tuesday. C/2nd Lt Dennis and C/ SMSgt Haley taught leadership classes on the second Tuesday. The following week, C/CMSgt Stewart lead the cadets in tness tes ng and training at Runners World. On the fourth Tuesday, we changed the format for star ng our mee ngs. The color guard now posts the colors, the cadets repeat the Cadet Oath, and we all join in and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. C/CMSgt Stewart gave a presenta on on the requirements for a Senior Member to be present at all cadet ac vi es and for all members to be safety current to par cipate in a CAP ac vity. C/Capt ini ated our new approach to Aerospace Educa on and Leadership training with the rst of three classes on Module 2. Lt Col Parker con nued the Aerospace Educa on Excellence (AEX) program with a presenta on on 10 famous aviators and their aircra . We topped o the month by promo ng six cadets to the next level of leadership 3 7 10 14 18 19 19 21 24 26 27 27 28

Civil Air Patrol Ac vi es

C/CMSgt Stewart gave an excellent brieng last week on the requirements for a senior member to be present at any CAP Ac vity and for the Squadron Commander to be aware of the ac vity. If you a end any ac vity or mee ng that is being led by a CAP member, the majority of a endees are CAP members, and it deals with a CAP subject area, then it is a CAP Ac vity. Just declaring it a NonCAP Ac vity does not change the fact it is a CAP Ac vity. If the Squadron Commander is not aware of the ac vity and a senior member is not present, it is an unauthorized CAP Ac vity and you will not a end or par cipate in it. You will immediately no fy your chain of command if you become aware of any unauthorized CAP Ac vity being planned or conducted. Any a empt by members to circumvent these requirements will not be tolerated. If you have any ques on about an ac vity or proposed ac vity, contact Lt Col Lorry McCarty, 1st Lt John DAngelo, or Lt Col Rick Parker.

TAC Ocers Wanted

We are looking for senior members to become squadron TAC ocers and be responsible for a specic cadet Flight. TAC stands for Train Advise Counsel. The TAC ocers will report directly to the Deputy Commander of Cadets and are not in the cadets chain of command. Their primary mission will be to observe ight ac vi es, assist the ight leadership as needed, and keep the cadets safe. If you are interested, contact Lt Col Lorry McCarty for more details.

Commanders Corner
Summer me is always tough for CAP squadrons as we compete with Na onal Cadet Special Ac vi es (NCSA), Encampments, Na onal Emergency Services Academy (NESA), summer school ac vi es, sum mer jobs, and family vaca ons for our members me. In southern Nevada, we are further limited in available ac vi es by 100+ degree heat. Some squadrons are even reducing the number of days they meet each month. We s ll have things to accomplish and will con n ue mee ng normally. However, it is very important to let us know in advance if you are going to be gone for a while. In the future, the cadet program will concentrate each month on either Aerospace Educa on or Leadership. That will give us more training me on each topic and hopefully see an improvement in our promo on rates. We will also be increasing our Emergency Services training for everyone and Professional Development training for the senior members. It is important to remember we are a Composite Squadron and not a Cadet Squadron. We are chartered to ac vely providing ac vi es to both cadets and senior members in all three missions of the Civil Air Patrol: Aerospace Educa on, Emergency Services, and Cadet Pro grams. Since assuming command, I have been focused on the Cadet Program but in the next couple of months, we will begin building up our senior member program to match our cadet program. The rst step will be when we will conduct a major recrui ng eort to coincide with the Clark County School District backtoschool pro gram. Our recrui ng eort will go beyond just handing out yers this me. I am a bit of an op mist, but I really expect we can have around 20+ cadets in our next Tango Class and increase our senior member numbers by at least 20 adults. We need to begin preparing for our Subordinate Unit Inspec on (SUI) selfinspec on in October. Our biggest problem now is that we have too few people lling too many primary squadron posi ons. If you are in the unassigned block in the a ached organiza onal chart, expect to hear from me about taking over a duty posi on as the pri mary ocer in charge. Take a good look at the organiza on and see what you would like to be doing. Aim High. Rick Parker, Lt Col, CAP Commander

Newsle ers, Calendars, and No ces

We publish a newsle er and a weekly calendar for a reason. We want each member to be aware of our squadrons goals, policies, organiza on, manning, issues, and ac vi es. The newsle er does that plus gives you ps on where to nd informa on you need to be successful in your CAP career. The monthly and weekly calendars allow you to be be er prepared for our mee ngs. This is equally important whether you are leading an ac vity or just par cipa ng in it. We send out no ces when we have important informa on that will not wait un l the next mee ng. If you do not have an email address you can access on a regular basis, get with another cadet or senior member and have them provide you the newsle ers, calendars, and no ces. If you cannot get another member to help you, contact Lt Col Lorrie McCarty directly and let her know about the problem.

Inputs for Monthly Newsle er

The newsle er will be published the weekend before the rst mee ng each month. If you have photos, ar cles, no ces, or anything you want to add to this newsle er, please provide them to Lt Col Parker no later than the last mee ng before the rst of each month. If you would be interested in being the editor of the newsle er, please contact Lt Col Parker.
