An Outline [for the Guides]

The etymology indicates that the word dissertation means a discourse in the form of formal, written treatise. 1 In the dissertation studio, students are encouraged to question and observe a phenomenon critically and are expected to describe his/ her thoughts in a contiguous narrative. In the process, they would raise specific set of research questions pertaining to the phenomenon under observation, discuss the theoretical framework forming the basis of the arguments, formulate the operative framework to be adopted and applied in the research, undertake certain research methods for the primary study to collect/collate and to analyze the relevant information/data in order to answer/address the research questions posed in the beginning and conclude by summing up various nuances observed in relation to the central concern of the research .

The course is divided into three components: 1. writing the research proposal, 2. research progress and communicating results and 3. writing the dissertation

The first component of the studio is still under process. However, about sixty (60) percent of the research proposals are approved so far and a list (including the name of the students, topics of the proposed research and the suggested guides) are forwarded herewith. Each student in this particular list has been directed to approach the guide with the research proposal containing the following information:

Dissertation is essentially a self-driven research endeavour to be pursued by an individual student under the supervision of one guide. Coordinator/s shall be responsible for ensuring the overall monitoring of the work in terms of approving the research proposals as well as setting up of the broad deadlines and deliverables.

Guides shall play a pivotal role in the next two components of the studio. Guides are chosen among the full-time faculty members in anticipation with their anticipated fields of expertise. With regard to undertaking the research, guides responsibilities shall include meeting with the assigned students at regular intervals, advising them how to conduct their research, offering advice on how to manage field contingencies and providing insights as the students proceed with analysis. Guides may also be required to impart necessary further directions on theoretical dimensions of the research. In terms of monitoring regular progress, guides are suggested to keep an attendance record of the day and time of the meeting with the respective student (for this purpose, students may sign some kind of record, like an attendance sheet). While writing the dissertation, the students shall organize his/her thoughts in a narrative manner appropriate to the research topic. We strongly discourage the format and the mindset of report writing. We recommend Harvard referencing style for the dissertations (a copy of which is kept in Sushant School library) and guides may need to verify whether the students writing work at every stage follow the same format.

We take a stern stand on the intellectual property theft; if any guide is aware of the plagiarism of any kind while reviewing the work of any students, he/she must inform the coordinators immediately.
