Course Title: Teaching Methods in British and American Culture

Course Summary
The purpose of this course is to introduce core concepts related to understanding and analysing culture and developing intercultural awareness. We will also examine how culture relates to the language classroom and practical ideas and methods for introducing culture to English language learners. In addition, the cultural issues surrounding the use of often Westerninspired teaching approaches and ideas in Korean teaching contexts will be covered in online multimedia material, reading and discussions. - Developing greater awareness of American and British culture and cultural diversity. - Developing intercultural analytical skills. - Developing awareness of teaching methodology and education practices within western educational contexts and the theoretical rationale for these practices. - Developing awareness of practical classroom techniques developed in western educational contexts and the rationale behind these techniques and approaches. - Reecting on the applicability and suitability of western inspired teaching methodology, approaches and techniques to Korean educational contexts, in terms of culturally specic general beliefs about learning and teaching in Korea, and in terms of the specic conditions and purposes for learning English within Korea.

Cultural Comparison Presentation: 20%, Pragmatics Presentation: 20%, Online Reading and Discussions: 20%, Methods and Cultural Appropriacy Essay 10%, Developing Materials Project: 10%, Participation/ Attendance 20%

Manner of Lecturing:
Presentations, Group Work, Discussions, Role-play. An on-line course Moodle will be provided offering multimedia materials reecting on issues related to teaching methods and cultural context,, for conducting discussions and uploading assignments, and for providing pdfs of course materials.
