The tour included an initial briefing covering airspace classifications, the airspace serviced by FAA Boston Approach and Boston Center, followed by a long question and answer session. Attendees then toured the live Boston Approach radar operations and had a chance to listen to actual air to ground communications. The cadets were also able to speak with the controllers and ask questions. It was a great AE activity. Thanks go to Mike Dunham and Kevin Brunelle of the FAA for their assistance in coordinating the tour. GLIDER PROGRAM TAKES OFF

Thanks to having assets already in place at Springfield, Vt., we will be able to start orientation and training flights in April this year. If you are a cadet and want to get scheduled, check with your unit commander for the assigned Oflight coordinator and put in your request. Preference is given to first flights. WANTED GROUND STAFF FOR GLIDER ACADEMIES!!! We will also be having two glider academies, 4-12 and 18-26 August in Springfield, VT. We are looking for dedicated Senior Members who want to support these cadet activities. We can use TAC officers (male and female), logistics, finance, food prep/servers and cooks We can also used someone experienced in using a riding lawn mower to tow the gliders on the ground. There is also a need for people who can pick up attendees at the airport or bus stations. There are limited accommodations but there are some B&Bs in the area and a reasonable charge for food. This is a great way to support the cadet program. Contact the Activity Director Lt. Col. Charles Freeman: kamaloha@gmail.com

NEW HAMPSHIRE WING SAREX 4 FEBRUARY 2012 LYME/DORCHESTER, NH By Lt Col Dan Nash, Lebanon Commander NH Wing Civil Air Patrol conducted a SAREX (Search and Rescue Exercise) on 4Feb12. Personnel moved to an overnight site in Lyme, NH on Friday 3Feb12. A Dartmouth Outing Club cabin on Reservoir Pond provided lodging for most of the attending personnel. Thanks to Cpt Bill Brown for making the arrangements for the cabin. A few intrepid souls decided to rough it in the cold. The photo below illustrates one of the hasty shelters they constructed.

Hasty Shelter. In photo: C/Maj Johnson, and C/Sgts Campbell and Tischbein. Ground Branch directors for the exercise were Maj Barrington and Capt Brown. Friday night activities included enjoying a wonderful meal of random MRE menu items, group inprocessing, planning the SAREX activities, and readying gear for the next day. It was a challenge to work without the internet! Maj Barrington went to the Dartmouth Skiway to utilize their wifi and communicate via wifi and cell with Wing HQ to provide ground team status. None of the exercise area had cell or internet coverage. We were able to communicate with wing using the van radio and a repeater. We also were able to communicate with the airplanes with hand-helds, as they conducted their searches. The search victims moved out to their lost locations. While they were moving, representatives from the New England K-9 Search and Rescue Team, Paula Harper and Amanda, conducted familiarization training with the K-9 team (Thanks to NE K-9, and Maj. Brechbuhl for arranging their attendance). They had a short brief to explain their function and how they operate. We learned some important things: While the team is searching, they are in charge, and the rest of the searchers must stay slightly behind and out of the way of the team, the PLS (Point Last Seen) is a crucial piece of information. The better the PLS information, the better the chance for a find. The dogs work on air scent. They look for an out of place scent. The ideal working pattern is cross wind, working the cone of scent. The K-9 works back and forth across the cone, narrowing the path of its search as he/she closes in on the victim. Handler and K-9 celebrate on the find, and turn over the operation to the search and rescue team. Search training was conducted. Search personnel broke into two teams to search for the victims. Search teams trained on map navigation, radio communication and using direction finding equipment.

Additional training tasks included signaling the aircraft with mirrors, and utilizing hand held radios. The search teams located the victims and conducted a litter carry of one back to the cabin. The victim discovered that being carried back was not the fun he had anticipated. The carry ended up being more of a drag over the ice and snow, getting some bumps and bruises, and ending up very cold from not being able to move. All in all it was a great training exercise and all returned home safely.
