Keeping Standards up-to-date Standards are living documents which reflect progress in science, technology and systems. To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and new editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued. Standards may also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves they are using a current Standard, which should include any amendments which may have been published since the Standard was purchased. Detailed information about joint Australian/New Zealand Standards can be found by visiting the Standards Australia web site at www.standards.com.au or Standards New Zealand web site at www.standards.co.nz and looking up the relevant Standard in the on-line catalogue. Alternatively, both organizations publish an annual printed Catalogue with full details of all current Standards. For more frequent listings or notification of revisions, amendments and withdrawals, Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand offer a number of update options. For information about these services, users should contact their respective national Standards organization. We also welcome suggestions for improvement in our Standards, and especially encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or ambiguities. Please address your comments to the Chief Executive of either Standards Australia International or Standards New Zealand at the address shown on the back cover.

PREFACE
This publication was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee, MS-004, Micrographics and Image Management. It is intended as a basic guide for microfilm operators and supervisors engaged in tasks normally associated with a microfilm service bureau. The publication refers to planetary cameras using roll film but much of the information is applicable also to microfilming with cameras using camera cards. Manufacturers instructions should be studied for additional guidance. The material for this guide is based on SAA MP251972, Basic guide to microfilming, which in turn drew on the work of the Defence Standardization Committee (Australia) of the time. The material is still current and is presented as a guide for initial training.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA/STANDARDS NEW ZEALAND Australian/New Zealand Miscellaneous Publication Basic guide to microfilming
1 SCOPE This publication provides guidance on operating techniques, error detection and correction, and operator maintenance of equipment for microfilming. Some explanatory material has been included to assist the operators understanding of the basic theory behind the laid-down procedures; however, this publication does not purport to deal exhaustively with micrographic technology.

A table listing some frequently encountered defects and their causes is shown in Appendix A. 2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS Reference should be made to the latest issue of the following AS 1203 3674 ISO 18901 Microfilming of engineering documents (all parts) Storage of microfilm Imaging materialsProcessed silver-gelatin type black-and-white films Specifications for stability

A recommended reference on preservation microfilming is: Guidelines for preservation microfilming in Australia and New Zealand. Canberra. National Library of Australia, 1998. 3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this publication, the definitions below apply. 3.1 Camera, planetary (microfilm) A microfilm camera in which the source document and the film are stationary during exposure. 3.2 Latent image fade The fading of a latent image that is not developed immediately after exposure. The fading depends on time, temperature, humidity, storage conditions and the type of emulsion. 3.3 Optical density A means of expressing a tone as a number. It expresses numerically the degree of opacity. There are two kinds of density. When the density value refers to the proportion of light transmitted through a transparent or translucent medium it is called transmission density. When it refers to the proportion of light reflected from a surface it is called reflectance density.
