HOW DID I EVER
FIND THE TIME TO WORK?
Instructor: Karen D. Kadushin
Once they either retire or cut back their work
schedules, many people wonder how they ever
managed to work full-time! Their schedules
are full, their stress levels are up, and they

working 40 hours (or more!) a week.
We can reduce stress and increase the time
available to each of us by learning and
applying the principles of Time Management.
In this seminar you will acquire the tools and
skills to open up your calendar and have
room for your want to activities in addition
to your have to tasks. Join us for a fun-flled
and enlightening two hours and discover the
secrets of stress reduction through managing
your time.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
Instructor: Patricia Hamilton
Social Media is the new paradigm for book
marketing, whether you have a publisher or are
self-published. Unless you are already famous,
many publishers no longer assign publicists to help

to develop their own platform, join groups and
network on the Internet to increase sales. This
hands-on internet-based session will explore the
big 3: Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, as well as
leading writers blogs.
Bring a laptop with Wi-Fi capability, and if you
have them: your author bio and photo, book
synopsis, book cover photo, a press release or other
marketing materials.

RUMI: THE SUFI POET
OF LOVE AND DEVOTION
Instructor: John Provost, MS

Is there a place for love and devotion in todays
society? Did you know there is a mystical side
to Islam that is the antidote to fanaticism and
violence? Or that the current best selling poet
in America is the 12th century poet Rumi? In
this class we will explore the life and poetry of
this Muslim mystic and saint. As we read and
discuss his poetry we will try to discern what
he has to say to modern Americans that might
still be important for us to hear 800 years later.

Time: 6:00 8:00pm

FOUR SPIRITUAL MASTERS
Instructor: John Provost, MS
Is there a place for wisdom in our modern,
busy world? What does Krishna have to say
about the immortality of the soul? What is
the Buddhas description of the fundamental
role of mental conditioning in making us who
we are? What did Jesus mean when he used
the phrase the Kingdom of God? What did
Rumi teach about the importance of devotion
and surrender? In todays polarized cultural
and political situation it is often helpful to
remember how much we have in common
with one another. This class will examine
four diverse wisdom traditions from the
perspective of the commonality and insight
of Four Spiritual Masters. What do the
diverse traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism,
Christianity and Islam have to say to one
another? And can they help us understand the
modern conditions under which we all live
today? If you are interested in learning about
and listening to four great spiritual masters,
then this class is for you! (4 meetings)

journey through time and the meaning of
aging and life itself. We will consult the great
minds of drama, epic and lyric poetry, and
novels from around the world: Gilgamesh,

how to respond, signifcantly infuences how
well or how poorly you, your family, and your
community will fare in such emergencies.

how to stay informed, and what to do and
not do in an emergency. This includes some
exciting new solutions and technology like the
recently introduced Alert-Monterey County
service. Participants will also be introduced to
Monterey Peninsulas network of community

their breeding courtship period of late winter.
Such vocalizations serve to assist in locating
these rather secretive animals.
In a mid-afternoon session participants will
review the species general biology and learn
to identify owls using life-sized silhouettes, as
well as their calls. Following a dinner break,
we re-assemble in a nearby area that harbors
at least four owl species, attempting to lure
calling birds into view.

CALIFORNIAS TOOLS
FOR DEMOCRACY:
Instructor: Fred Keeley
Californians cherish their tools of direct
democracy. In 1905, Hiram Johnson and the
Progressive movement took power with the
election of Johnson as governor and a working
majority for the Progressive Party in the
California Legislature. In the statewide election
of 1911, they wrestled power away from the
powerful railroad owners, and gave, literally,
power to the people. They accomplished this by
placing constitutional amendments on the ballot
to establish the initiative, referendum and recall.
These remain as some of the most powerful and
popular tools for making public policy outside
of the legislature.
As time has moved on, these popular and
populist tools have continued to be valuable,
but have also changed in terms of utility
to Californians. Because of the number of
signatures required to use the initiative, and the
huge growth in Californias population, these
popular tools have moved more and more away
from the people. Some argue that the initiative
has become a captive of special and monied
interests.
OLLI at CSUMB is honored to welcome back
Fred Keeley for this special six-part series which

ALTERNATE FUELS:
MANDATORY OR OPTIONAL?
Instructor: Dr. Allen Fuhs
Two factors, climate change and petroleum
peaking are forcing behavior and policy
changes whether or not we are ready for them.
Failure to develop a fully functional alternate
fuel infrastructure may cause both economic
and social chaos. The government must play a
crucial role in preparing for the crises.
Analogies for a soon-to-arrive energy crisis
have included the Titanic, the brink of a
waterfall, and pulling the ripcord in sky
diving. Is this alarmist? Aeronautics and
engineering expert Dr. Allen Fuhs will give
his perspective on the gargantuan petroleum
industry, as well as an equally huge one:
replacement alternate fuels.

THE AFGHANISTAN WAR
Instructor: Dr. Ehsan Entezar
Tens of thousands of American troops are in
Afghanistan, led by a new commander, and
armed with a counter-insurgency plan that
builds on the lessons of Iraq. But can U.S.
forces succeed in a land long known as the
graveyard of empires? And, is it worth it?
Historians tell us that no invader has been
successful in conquering and retaining the
territory we know today as Afghanistan. Join
the native Afghan scholar, Dr. Entezar, for an
in-depth look at the history of Afghanistan
from the Soviet Invasion to 9/11, as well the
U.S. response and options since then.

THE GICLE EXPERIENCE
Instructor: Pat Watson
Gicle, the buzzword thats sweeping the
world of gallery art and exhibition, represents
a process that integrates the creative power of
digital technology with the personalized touch
of traditional drawing and painting skills. It
represents a level of skill and sophistication
previously unreachable without countless
hours in the studio.
Students will convert their own personal
artwork and photography into digital format
using tools such as Adobe Photoshop and
Corel Painter. They will then be output from
the ITCD large-format printer onto canvas.
The resulting canvas-based digital print is
stretched and treated and the student-artist
then adds creative touches with oil pastels.
The class will then gather for a group showing
of their art. (2 meetings)
Dates: Saturdays, Apr 24; May 1
Time: 10:00am 5:00pm
