Gist Article 1 The writer introduces us to the general concerned populations in Indonesia who realised the importance of the English language for the future of their sons and daughters. And what better way to gain excellence if not sending them to the best schools with the best and competent English teacher. The writer questions the notion of who is exactly the better English teacher. Most would imply that he who talks English naturally and are foreigners are the best teachers of that foreign language. But there is a question of the pedagogical skills that these teachers must have in order to be an effective teacher. The writer suggests that both should exist. He highlights the negative side of having a native English teacher who lacks the pedagogical skills of making children learn. The writer however does not entirely saying that the native English speaking teacher isnt competent just because he or she does not have the necessary qualification to teach. The question posed by the writer is that are they really capable to teach? Another issue is about the recruitment process of native English teachers. The writer made a comparison about the procedures between the United States and Indonesia itself. The united states have a more strict

and demands more from foreign language teachers who wanted to teach in their learning institutions. Compared to the recruitment process in Indonesia, which is ambiguous as the writer suggests. Then, theres the question of salary or payment to the non-native and native English language teachers. The writer implied that foreigners are paid higher than non-native teachers with the same qualifications and capability or maybe even better than the native English speaker teacher.

Gist Article 2 The writer starts by reflecting on the recent issue of the Ministry of Education Malaysia who intends to bring in Foreign Native English Speaking Teachers to Malaysia and assist in the cause of uplifting the standard of English in the country. The writer do acknowledge the confusing term of what is actually meant by native English speaker teacher which had some scratching their heads in confusion or simply misguided over the term. The writer then moved on to the question of who is the better English teacher? Foreign or native? With his experienced abroad, he believes that some native English speaking fellow really arent that proficient in the standard form of English. The writer finally made things clear about the term which he believes the Ministry of Education really meant. It is trained teachers of English from other countries and not just random English speaking fellow from countries like England or the United States of America. The writer continued with the concern of Sarawak Teachers Union president over the matter and suggested proper ways to spend the Malaysian Ringgit if the goal is to uplift the standard of English in schools. The writer also suggests what he feels are the effective way to learn the language which is through lots of reading. The writer then redirected us to the issue of English proficiency as the necessary tool for a prosperous Malaysia. He quoted two prominent figures in Malaysian politics for that matter. Lastly, the writer acknowledges the Ministrys plan to uplift the English language proficiency which he saw as a good effort nonetheless.
