Keeping Standards up-to-date

Standards are living documents which reflect progress in science, technology and
systems. To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and
new editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued.
Standards may also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves
they are using a current Standard, which should include any amendments which
may have been published since the Standard was purchased.
Detailed information about joint Australian/New Zealand Standards can be found by
visiting the Standards Web Shop at www.standards.com.au or Standards New
Zealand web site at www.standards.co.nz and looking up the relevant Standard in
the on-line catalogue.
Alternatively, both organizations publish an annual printed Catalogue with full
details of all current Standards. For more frequent listings or notification of
revisions, amendments and withdrawals, Standards Australia and Standards New
Zealand offer a number of update options. For information about these services,
users should contact their respective national Standards organization.
We also welcome suggestions for improvement in our Standards, and especially
encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or
ambiguities. Please address your comments to the Chief Executive of either
Standards Australia or Standards New Zealand at the address shown on the back
cover.

PREFACE
This Interim Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New
Zealand Committee TX-012, Wool, to adopt the length after carding method developed by
the Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand.
This Standard incorporates Amendment No. 1 (January 2005). The changes required by the
Amendment are indicated in the text by a marginal bar and amendment number against the
clause, note, table, figure or part thereof affected.
The Standard sets out a method for measuring the fibre length after carding of commercially
scoured or carbonised wool and includes sampling and preparation procedures. These are
carried out using a mechanical sampling device, a card and a gillbox. Recommendations are
made regarding the choice of suitable machines. The measurements are made using a
suitable electronic instrument.
This is a free 7 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

A method for the measurement of card waste from commercially scoured or carbonised
wool is covered in AS/NZS 4844.2(Int):2002 Wool—Measurement of fibre properties,
Part 2: Measurement of fibre length after carding waste of scoured or carbonised wool.
Attention is drawn to the fact that this document is an Interim Australian/New Zealand
Standard and should be regarded as a developmental Standard and liable to future
alteration.
During the life of the document the Committee will monitor all comment as it is received.
This Interim Standard will have a currency of two years from its date of publication. At the
conclusion of that period it will either be superseded by another Standard, confirmed as an
Interim Standard in its present form for a further two year period or withdrawn.
The terms ‘normative’ and ‘informative’ have been used in this Interim Standard to define
the application of the appendix to which they apply. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral
part of a Standard, whereas an ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and guidance.

FOREWORD
Data on the fibre length after carding is of value to buyers, sellers, primary processors and
manufacturers of wool products. It identifies an important parameter relevant to
merchandising of the product as well as its end use, and the appropriate conditions for
processing the wool into yarn. Such a parameter, when specified, enables its incorporation
in commercial contracts.
Many difficulties have been experienced by the commercial sector through the application
of non-standard techniques or by the use of such procedures as the single fibre length
measurement of slivers. Variable repeatability and low precision have been experienced.
The length after carding test method addresses these problems, and takes into account the
breakage of fibres in the carding and aligning processes.
This is a free 7 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

Mill length after carding results for a given consignment of scoured or carbonised wool,
will not necessarily match the results from the standard test. Results from mill production
will be affected by the processing performance of the equipment in the mill, however the
length after carding test result can be used for benchmarking. In the event of a dispute or
challenge to the test result, it is important that any retest is performed in strict accordance
with this Interim Standard.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA/STANDARDS NEW ZEALAND

Interim Australian/New Zealand Standard

Wool—Measurement of fibre properties

Part 1: Measurement of the fibre length after carding of scoured or

carbonised wool

SECT ION 1 SCOPE AND GENERA L

1.1 SCOPE
This is a free 7 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

This Interim Standard sets out a method for determining the fibre length after carding and
gilling of scoured or carbonised wool, the wool initially being in the form of LAC grab
samples. The method covers the following wool types:
(a) All carbonised wool.
(b) All scoured wool with a vegetable matter base of ≤ 2.0%.
(c) If the vegetable content is not known, all scoured wool produced from greasy wool
that has a measured or appraised vegetable matter base of ≤ 1.0%.
The procedures for sampling and for the preparation of the wool before measurement are
also described.
NOTE: Whilst this Interim Standard defines the methodology being developed, it has no official
status for commercial usage, unless agreed to between contracting parties.

1.2 OBJECTIVE
The objective of this Interim Standard is to provide the wool industry with a means of
measuring fibre length after carding of scoured or carbonised wool for the purpose of
specifying fibre lengths consistently when trading.

1.3 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS

The following documents are referred to in this Interim Standard:
IWTO AS/NZS*
0 Introduction to IWTO specifications. Procedures for the development,
review, progression or relegation of IWTO test methods and draft test
methods
10 Method for the determination of the dichloromethane soluble matter
in combed wool sliver
12 Measurement of the mean and distribution of fibre diameter using the
SIROLAN-LASERSCAN fibre diameter analyser
IWTO AS/NZS
17 Determination of fibre length distribution parameters by means of the
Almeter

* The Australian/New Zealand Standards listed are identical adoptions of the corresponding IWTO document.
