PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee
IT/1 on Information Systems— Interconnection. It is identical with and has been reproduced from
ISO/IEC 9594-7:1995, Information technology— Open Systems Interconnection— The Directory:
Selected object classes. This edition will be concurrent with AS 4019.7 — 1992, Information
technology — Open Systems Interconnection — The Directory, Part 7: Selected object classes.
The objective of this Standard is to provide users of information technology with a definition of a
number of object classes and name forms which may be found useful across a range of applications
of the Directory.
This Standard is one of a series of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Standards which are
currently under development. Since OSI Standards are developmental, there may be some minor
difficulties encountered in their implementation. For this reason, Standards Australia will be

providing, through the OSI Help Desk, a service to coordinate and disseminate information
concerning difficulties which are identified in using this Standard.
This edition technically revises and enhances AS 4019.7. Implementation may still claim
conformance to AS 4019.7. However, at some point, AS 4019 will no longer be supported. It is
recommended that implementation conform to AS/NZS 4019.7:1996 as soon as possible.
This Standard is Part 7 of AS/NZS 4019, Information technology— Open Systems Interconnection—
The Directory, which is published in Parts as follows:
Part 1: Overview of concepts, models and services
Part 2: Models
Part 3: Abstract service definition
Part 4: Procedures for distributed operation
Part 5: Protocol specifications
Part 6: Selected attribute types
Part 7: Selected object classes (this Standard)
Part 8: Authentication framework
Part 9: Replication
Users of this Standard are advised by Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand, under
arrangements made with ISO and IEC, as well as certain other Standards organizations, that the
number of this Standard is not reproduced on each page; its identity is shown only on the cover and
title pages.
For the purpose of this Standard, the source text should be modified as follows:
(a) Terminology The words ‘this Australian/New Zealand Standard’ should replace the words
‘this International Standard’ wherever they appear.
(b) Decimal marker Substitute a full point for a comma where it appears as a decimal marker.
(c) References The references to international Standards should be replaced by references, where
appropriate, to the following Australian or Joint Australian/New Zealand Standards:

AUSTRALIAN/NEW ZEALAND STANDARD

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY — OPEN SYSTEMS INTERCONNECTION —
THE DIRECTORY: SELECTED OBJECT CLASSES

SECTION 1 — GENERAL

1 Scope
This Recommendation International Standard defines a number of object classes and name forms which
may be found useful across a range of applications of the Directory. The definition of an object class involves
listing a number of attribute types which are relevant to objects of that class. The definition of a name form
involves naming the object class to which it applies and listing the attributes to be used in forming names for
objects of that class. These definitions are used by the administrative authority which is responsible for the
management of the directory information.
This is a free 7 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

Any administrative authority can define its own object classes or subclasses and name forms for any purpose.
NOTES
1 Those defi niti ons may or may not use the notati on specif ied in ITU-T Rec. X.501 ISO/I EC 9594-2.
2 It is recommended that an object class defi ned in this Recommendati on Internati onal Standard, or a subclass derived
fr om one, or a name form defined in this Recommendation International Standard, be used in preference to the generati on of a new
one, whenever the semantics is appropri ate for the application.

Administrative authorities may support some or all the selected object classes and name forms, and may also
add additional ones.
All administrative authorities shall support the object classes which the directory uses for its own purpose
(the top, alias and DSA object classes).

2 Normative references
The following Recommendations and International Standards contain provisions which, through reference in
this text, constitute provisions of this Recommendation International Standard part. At the time of
publication, the editions indicated were valid. All Recommendations and Standards are subject to revision,
and parties to agreements based on this Recommendation International Standard are encouraged to
investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the Recommendations and Standards listed
below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International Standards. The
Telecommunication Standardization Bureau of the ITU maintains a list of currently valid ITU-T
Recommendations.
