This Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard was prepared by Joint Technical Committee
IT/19, Computer Applications—Information and Documentation. It was approved on
behalf of the Council of Standards Australia on 16 February 1999 and on behalf of the
Council of Standards New Zealand on 1 April 1999. It was published on 5 May 1999.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee
IT/19, Computer Applications—Information and Documentation, to supersede
AS/NZS 4279(Int):1995. It is identical with, and has been reproduced from, ISO 23950:1998,
Information and documentation—Information retrieval (Z39.50)—Application service definition
and protocol specification.
The objective of this Standard is to provide organizations such as information services,
universities, libraries and union catalogue centres with the information retrieval application
services, protocol definition and support capabilities within an application that in turn are
supported by the Z39.50 protocol allowing the conformance requirements to be met by
implementors of this protocol.
The terms ‘normative’ and ‘informative’ have been used in this Standard to define the
application of the appendix to which they apply. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral part of a

Standard, whereas an ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and guidance.
