The Haddonfield Sun
Longtime gardener Mary Pre-
vite rarely shops in grocery
stores during the summer.
She is too busy working in her
garden plot at Crows Woods in
Haddonfield.
Its just such a bountiful sup-
ply of everything from lettuce to
spinach to onions, the Haddon-
field resident explained while
walking through the community
gardens, all the while pointing
out which crops were doing well
this year.
These are cabbages. Look at
how beautiful that is, she said
after locating a hefty, colorful veg-
etable patch.
Cucumber flowers were bloom-
ing in her garden and squash has
had a bumper crop this year.
Tomatoes appeared later in the
season than usual, but were
bright red and ripe.
A green thumbs up for gardens

Gardens are seen at the end of July at Crows Woods in Haddonfield. While the crops have endured hot conditions, they are growing in excess.
An area has been set up to donate produce to the Food Bank of South Jersey.

Board of Education approves letter of intent
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Haddonfield Sun
The Board of Education ap-
proved a letter of intent to pur-
chase the Bancroft property off of
Kings Highway. The vote at last
weeks meeting came after three
public meetings in July to discuss
the joint acquisition between the
Board of Education and the bor-
ough.
The borough previously unani-
mously approved the letter of in-
tent.
Joe Ehrhardt was the sole
board member to vote against the
approval.
The assessed value of
$12,192,500 is based on an assess-
ment performed a few years ago,
Ehrhardt explained, and the
property is at a premium.
The appraisal process makes
him uncomfortable, he said. He
suggested having the new ap-
praiser work with the former
one.
Renwick & Associates Valua-
tion Solutions, a certified firm
based out of Maple Shade that is
on the Green Acres list, will ap-
praise the property for a fee of
$19,500.
The results will be made public
when known, board president
Steve Weinstein said.
An appraisal is needed for the
board, the Department of Educa-
tion and for Open Space. If the ap-
praisal results are not close
enough to the purchase price, the
deal may be off, Weinstein said.
A public bond referendum will
be held in January to ultimately
decide on the $16.8 million pur-
chase.
To further discuss the issues of
cost and safety related to turf
fields, a meeting will be held in
September.
The Board of Education has
three main duties, Weinstein ex-
plained. They oversee the current
state of the schools, decide on an
annual budget for the tax rate and
look to the future of the district
whether that may be five, 10 or 25
years from now.
The purchase of the Bancroft
property addresses future needs,
he said, in both education and
athletics.
Each school building is at ca-
pacity, he said.
There is no place for that edu-
cational purpose to grow, he

said, and it would be good stew-
ardship to provide space for fu-
ture expansion.
The proposal is as democratic
of a process as you can get, Wein-
stein has repeatedly said, stating
that if the public feels that it is
not a beneficial purchase for the
town, they will have the opportu-
nity to vote against it.
If the public approves the refer-
endum, Bancroft will have the op-
portunity to stay on-site for two
years while it searches for a new
campus.
In the third year, it would pay
$400,000 in rent.
By the end of the third year,
Bancroft would need to provide a
plan to vacate the property. If it
stays a fourth year, the rent would
be $500,000.
Without a plan to leave the
property, Bancroft would be in de-
fault.
They have a great incentive to
get out, Weinstein said.
Those in attendance had many
questions and concerns through-
out the meeting.
While everyone might not
agree with the purchase, Wein-
stein explained that the board
members have put many unpaid
hours into the issue and have
tried to come to the right deci-
sion.
The next Board of Education
meeting is currently scheduled
for Thursday, Aug. 23 in the mid-
dle school library.

N
ew Jersey does solar power.
Does it well. Does it too well,
as it turns out.
According to the governors office,
the state installed more solar capacity
in the first quarter of 2012 than any
other state and led the nation in solar
installations on commercial and indus-
trial properties in 2011.
Now, thats a source of pride. Being a
national leader in something other
than reality television shows is a good
thing.
But, as it turns out, you can have too
much of a good thing.
The supply of solar power has now
surpassed the demand, bringing the
market crashing down. And when the
market crashes, solar projects in the
construction phase can stop. Jobs can
be lost. The momentum of the solar in-
dustry can come to a halt.
The measure signed by Gov.
Christie, which had bipartisan sup-
port, aims to boost the market by re-
quiring power companies to purchase
more solar power. In other words, the
state is trying to increase the demand,
hoping that, eventually, it catches up to
the supply, thereby giving those in the
business of building solar projects a
reason to keep doing what theyre
doing.
We think the bill certainly cant
hurt, given the current market situa-
tion, but we also agree with experts
who think more might need to be done.
In a statement, the Mid-Atlantic
Solar Energy Industries Association
points out that the measure doesnt do
enough to prevent a recurrence of the
over-supply situation. It proposes con-
trolling the pace of solar project pro-
duction.
It might be a bit premature to take
that step, but, as the state has seen, this
is a market that, left to its own, can run
itself into the ground fairly quickly.
Give the new measure time to work.
See if the demand can catch up to the
supply. But be ready to step in if it be-
comes clear that more steps are needed
to avoid another crash.
in our opinion
Solar solution
Recent action will help the market, at least in the short term
A super-solar state
New Jersey is a national leader when it
comes to producing solar power. Oddly,
that is now a bad thing. Supply exceeds
demand, and the market has crashed.
A measure signed last month will help
to correct that.
Zucchinis were plentiful enough to pro-
vide for Prevites signature and coveted
pineapple zucchini bread.
With crops growing in abundance, the
gardeners have decided to give back.
Were starting a new initiative right
now. Were going to team up with the South
Jersey Food Bank to have a place here to
put any excess produce so we can give that
to people in need, said President Paul
Schmeck of the all-volunteer community.
We just started.
Helping as many people as possible
through the gardens is what drives
Schmeck, a gardener for as long as he can
possibly remember.
Anyone whos growing vegetables, I
think, is making a positive difference to-
ward the earth, he said.
One of his main goals is to transition the
gardens, which have 80 plots and roughly
100 gardeners, into becoming fully organic.
Current guidelines state that organic
methods are strongly encouraged, he
said, however, if a new gardeners plot be-
comes infested, they may start spraying
pesticides from an area garden store.
The seasoned gardeners are always on
hand to help those just starting out with
any issues that may arise.
I always wondered why we werent or-
ganic, he mused.
Most of us are grateful that were eat-
ing chemical-free vegetables, added Pre-
vite.
The gardens have recently undergone an
expansion to allow for interested parties to
place their stake in some land.
Schmeck, an architect by trade, printed
an image from Google Maps and sketched
where he wished to put the new gardens.
He coordinated with borough officials to
secure the expansion, explained Previte.
With the zoning of Haddonfield provid-
ing for houses to be closer together and
thus more shade, a community garden
adds to the town, the gardeners explained.
People could use a place to grow veg-

On Friday July 27, 14 Haddon-
field students and two chaperones
boarded a school bus for the trip
to John F. Kennedy airport in
New York City, where they had a
direct flight to Kasukabe, Japan.
Beginning in January when
applications were submitted to
the HJE Committee, the selection
process started and was nar-
rowed down to 14 from more than
20 applicants of Haddonfields
best students. Following their se-
lection, classes were held every
two weeks to prepare these adven-
turesome students with Japanese
customs and culture as well as
some basic Japanese expressions.
The preparations were final-
ized with a luncheon at the Fuji
Restaurant in Haddonfield where
chef owner Matt Ito provided a
varied and typical Japanese
lunch for the students. A few days
before the departure date, a Say-
onara party was held at the Mroz
family home. This gathering pro-
vided an opportunity for parents
and students to mingle and share
expectations.
From first reports from Japan,
the students are enjoying time
with their host families, many of
whom are families of students
that have attended the exchange
trip to Haddonfield in the sum-
mer of 2010.
Their first weekend was spent
shopping, touring, bowling, in-
dulging in sushi, and making new
friends. During their 12-day visit
the students will be attending Ka-
sukabe High School, Haddon-
fields sister school, where they
will be learning calligraphy,
speaking Japanese and learning
other aspects of the culture. In
addition, they will travel to
Tokyo, Mt. Fuji and other cities
nearby.
The opportunity to learn first-
hand about a culture that is much
different, but also similar in some
ways, is an experience that prom-
ises to mature and broaden the
outlook on the world for our stu-
dents, said returning program
director Bill Brown.
With the continued support of
families, schools and community
members, HJE hopes to carry on
this cultural exchange tradition
for years to come.

Fourteen Haddonfield high school students are in Kasukabe, Japan,
to learn about other cultures. There was a long preparation process
prior to leaving the country on July 27 with two chaperones.
Haddonfield students travel to Japan
On July 23, at 4 p.m., the execu-
tive management team from RPM
Performance Coatings Group, an
RPM International Inc. affiliated
company headquartered in Maple
Shade rang the time honored clos-
ing bell at the New York Stock Ex-
change in celebration of reaching
$1 billion in sales. The company,
which began in 1997, has ac-
quired more than 10 leader-in-in-
dustry companies who collective-
ly offer corrosion control prod-
ucts and building solutions to in-
dustries in more than 25 coun-
tries.
Many of the members of the
RPM Performance Coatings
Group began their business ca-
reers with the Maple Shade-based

Pat Shea, VP International Fi-
nance (also a Haddonfield resi-
dent) had the distinction of ring-
ing the closing bell, a tradition
that dates back to 1903 to indicate
the end of trading for the day.
Other company leaders included
in the ceremony were Alan
Brooks, president StonCor Cana-
da, Dick Wilson, president, Car-
boline and Eric Breiner, presi-
dent, Fibergrate. You can view a

gies, said Schmeck.
Gardener Paul Eckman is
known for his corn stalks.
He was at the gardens tying up
his falling sunflowers.
Whats fun about gardening,
especially at Crows Woods, is that
every year is different, he said.
Some years, the tomatoes are
great. Other years, theyre not so
great.
Hot weather and varmints
have posed the biggest risks to the
produce this year, he explained,
but fortunately, red tail hawks cir-
cle above, monitoring the popula-
tions.
They help control the rabbit
population, he said.
The gardens, designed by the
late Walt Saladik, have been in ex-
istence for about 30 years. The
current location used to house
the town dump.
You could not find an earth-
worm here when we got here,
said Previte.
Nowadays, she sits on a bench
with her Nook, listening to the
birds and enjoying the peaceful-
ness.
Theres nothing lovelier than
being out in the sunshine and
fresh air and birds flying
around, she said.
