PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee CH/10 on the Analysis of Metals to supersede AS 1050.20 —1983, Methods
for the analysis of iron and steel, Part 20: Determination of magnesium in iron and steel
(flame atomic absorption spectrometric method).
It is issued as a Joint Standard under the terms of the Active Cooperation Agreement
between Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand.

1 SCOPE This Standard sets out a flame atomic absorption spectrometric method for
the determination of the magnesium content of iron and steel. The method is applicable in
the range 0.010% to 0.25% magnesium in all grades of iron and steel.

4 REAGENTS
4.1 General requirements During the analysis, only reagents of recognized analytical
reagent grade and only distilled water or water of an equivalent purity shall be used.
4.2 Solids
4.2.1 Magnesium metal (purity >99.9% magnesium); or magnesium oxide, previously
ignited at 1000°C.
NOTE: The magnesium metal should be cleaned immediately before use by washing with
hydrochloric acid (4.3.3) followed by water and then acetone.
4.2.2 Iron metal (containing <0.001% magnesium).
4.3 Solutions
4.3.1 Nitric acid (ρ 20 1.42 g/mL)
4.3.2 Hydrochloric acid (500 mL/L) Add 500 mL of hydrochloric acid (ρ20 1.18 g/mL)
to 450 mL of water. Cool and dilute to 1 L.
