Volume 12, Number 31

Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you (Acts 17:22-23). I guess there has always been advertising along the roads. There may well of have been billboards on the Appian Way that advertised the latest models of new chariots. Maybe, there was even a sign for a market convenient to the Coliseum, offering great prices on throw-able vegetables. Modern times, the past one hundred years or so, have seen our highways bordered by uncountable signage. Most of the signs fly past us with little more than a glance. We are used to them. Some of the signs identify well with the age old recognition that sex sells. From toothpaste to tools, we see it applied. A western wear store uses an apparently naked young woman sitting behind a strategically placed cowboy hat with the line, Want to see more? It may be that we have grown all too accustomed to that kind of advertising. Whatever happened to the Burma Shave signs? A sign caught my attention recently. It was the billboard company trying to sell the space. Leaning on the modern communication of cryptic texting, the sign really bothered me. You may have seen it. If I remember correctly, the sign stated, (Please pardonRD) O.M.G. Becky, Look at the size of this ad. It is SO BIG! It is the first three letters that get me. It not only annoys and bothers me. It angers me. To use an acronym for God in such an empty and silly way tears at all dignity due to the Lord. Remember, one of the great commands to the Israelites, and a principle of reverence is that the Lords name never be used in a vain (empty, selfish) way (Exodus 20:7). Disrespect almost anything you desire, but do not bring the name of the Lord into such vain usage. Russ
