International Meteorological Satellite Workshop for South-American Users

Executive Summary
The International Meteorological Satellite Workshop for South-American Users was a part of a series of meteorological satellite courses provided by the European Organization for the Exploration of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) in Brazil. The workshop was held August 20-24, 2007 in Macei, Brazil. There were a total of 40 representatives of 30 institutions from the government, academia, and the private sector. The objectives of this workshop were twofold. The first was to describe reception, processing, visualization, and dissemination mechanisms of data and products derived from meteorological satellites to support weather operations in South America. The second objective was to provide a techno-scientific exchange in environmental and atmospheric sciences between various South-American research institutes. These two objectives were closely related and successfully met. A fundamental point of the gathering was the exchange of user knowledge of the EUMETCast reception system between the various segments of South-American users that were present. The workshop was hosted by the Instituto de Cincias Atmosfricas (ICAT), Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL). It is anticipated that future workshops will continue this effort to explore how best satellite observations complement severe weather warning operations in South America. The future workshops will involve collaborative activities between operational meteorological centers and universities engaged in Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) data.

Recommendations
During the workshop, several recommendations were made. They are: Recommendation #1: Provide two free collaborative workshops to the South-American users who are clients of EUMETCast system. The first will facilitate the training for the EUMETCast reception system operators and shall be headed by specialists in the processing of Meteosat images. The second would be made exclusively to users of MSG images. Continue to rotate the location of the workshop. Recommendation #2: Differentiate the acquisition of the EUMETCast between license and financial contributions to EUMETCast. Recommendation #3: Continue the EUMETCast data distribution for the South American users. Recommendation #4: Create a committee (delegates) EUMETCast/GEONETCast data distribution in the Americas. to accompany the

Concluding Remarks
In summary, this workshop was a productive one. It improved the lines of communication between potential users from operational meteorological centers and universities in the EUMETCast data distribution. Each of the presenters and attendees are to be thanked. Progress was made on each of the two workshop goals mentioned above.
