PC POWER MANAGEMENT AND STREAMLINED SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT

Leveraging Existing Systems Management Without Affecting User Productivity

About the US Department of State The United States Department of State (DoS) is the United States federal executive department responsible for international relations of the United States, equivalent to the foreign ministries of other countries. The Department was created in 1789 and was the first executive department established. Today it covers more than 50 domestic facilities, and has over 250 US embassies, consulates and passport agencies which in total account for 88,986 workstations.Praesent consectetur tortor eu eleifend malesuada. Nunc turpis orci, ullamcorper vel venenatis a, suscipit nec eros. Secretary Clinton in her 2009 Earth Day Speech identified that the State Departments computer services take up about 3% of its building space but consume 40% of the electricity load. She said, We are working with a team from the IT department to narrow that ratio, but one thing we could all do is turn off our computers. That actually would save energy. Federal mandates assess agencies on a variety of sustainability areas, including energy management. Historically, the Department mandated that all 88,986 desktops at its 468 worldwide sites be kept on 24/7 to ensure regular security scanning, maintenance, and patching. However, to comply with federal mandates (such as EO13514) and support the Departments Greening Diplomacy Initiative, the Department launched an agency-wide initiative to eliminate power waste across 100 percent of its workstation computers.

Operating under a distributed deployment model, the Department needed a flexible tool that worked with its existing systems management platform (ConfigMgr) to accommodate the specialized needs of each individual, while eliminating duplication of efforts. After an extensive review, it purchased NightWatchman Enterprise to reduce power consumption costs and carbon emissions through scheduled shutdown of workstations. The Department minimized the amount of new hardware required by leveraging the existing, centralized ConfigMgr infrastructure to deploy NightWatchman Enterprise across the Departments entire global network. This has significantly lowered both energy consumption and CO2 emissions without impacting user productivity. The robust reporting capabilities built into NightWatchman Enterprise empower the Department to accurately document both power and carbon consumption savings through a highly customized dashboard, Enterprise View. The WakeUp agent (the Wake-on-LAN component of NightWatchman Enterprise) enables the Departments workstations to be powered on for patching, scanning (security, ConfigMgr, patch, virus, etc.), and software installation. These tasks are performed during non-business hours, minimizing impact to normal day-to-day business operations and user productivity. Additionally, WakeUp provides proactive health checks and automatically fixes common issues with SCCM client agents.

Seamless Integration for Maximum Effect to Reduce Carbon and Save Energy
About NightWatchman Enterprise Accurate reporting with credible savings predictions Safe shutdown which never impacts user productivity Automatic wakes and patches every PC - 100 percent patch success rate even out of hours Web WakeUp enables users to remotely access their PC at any time Suports secure environments PC Estate Profiler monitors and reports on hardware utilization across a PC estate. NightWatchman Enterprise integrates seamlessly with the Departments systems management platform (Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager) and initiatives, including centralized patch management, continuous monitoring, risk scoring, and compliance and vulnerability scanning. This compatibility provides a cost-effective, yet highly powerful opportunity for the Department, while also bolstering the Departments Office of Management and Budget (OMB) scores, by ensuring machines are accessible for ongoing scans at all times. Additionally, this single enterprise solution eliminated duplication of effort for individual sites to develop, implement and manage their own solutions, while still allowing the flexibility to address each sites individual needs. Since deployment in November 2010, NightWatchman Enterprise has led to savings in energy, cost, and time for the Department. It has been widely accepted by the Departments extensive, global user base for its automation, flexibility, and ease of support, as well as its intuitive reporting features. The Department also needed an effective way to proactively maintain the security of desktops and laptops at remote sites. Based in sensitive locations globally with no IT staff, these sites faced tremendous network constraints. The remote sites relied on bandwidth-challenged 512Kbps satellite links to deliver 400+ MB packages to desktops and deploying servers simply was not a feasible option. In the Spring of 2011, the Department further expanded its initiative with 1E by deploying Nomad Enterprise. Using spare network bandwidth, Nomad securely delivers Operating System upgrades, software deployments and patches safely and securely to thousands of PCs and servers day or night with zero disruption. This removes the need for branch servers or desk-side visits reducing existing server footprint and administrative overhead.
