Don Emmanuel L. Nolasco Part 1 1. What is the relationship of psychology to education?

Foundation of Education 1

Psychology is the study of human behavior. By dealing with students, it is imperative for a teacher to understand the behavior of the students in order for the classroom to succeed. By understanding the psychology of the students, it allows the educators to further improve their methods and adapt to the different learning styles of the students. 2. Which do you think is more important to human to human development, hereditary or environmental influence? The question of nature versus nature is an important question to discuss in educational psychology. Both environmental influence and hereditary factors determine the behavior of a person only up to a certain degree. But I feel that environmental influence plays a much more important role in the persons development because the environment plays a longer role in the development. The environment hones the person longer and allows the remodeling of values that may be set by hereditary conditions. 3. As you look back on your own adolescence, which do you consider the most important events or the most experiences, which were evidence of your achieving independence from adults? I grew up in family where discipline and responsibility is imposed to us. My father taught me the important of the value of my time and opportunity. He is my first teacher and consequently my critique. High school life is the most important event that leads me to value independence in life. But independence is not just a matter of leaving on my own, as a family whose source of income is from agriculture I cannot say that I can own my independence. During weekends and holidays, my father asks me and my brothers to help him in the farm. So, I need to balance my time to be a responsible son to my family. Sometimes I am blaming my father for getting lower grades but as I reflect on the larger picture of our problem, I came to a conclusion that I need to understand our situation. I need to patient, understanding and hardworking. I make a time table every week to balance my studies, my extra-curricular activities and to my peers. I am the deputy cadet commander of our CAT during high school so I need to be a role model to my coofficers. I also excel in social studies subjects that make me realize my potential on history and leadership skills. Growing up makes me realize the importance of family values in learning. I acquire the sensitivity and passion in all the things that I am doing. I learned that mistakes are not reason to give up but an inspiration to be a better person. Well, I cannot site all the memories that make me of who I am but at the end I am sure that all my experiences bad or good has an impact in my teaching method. That I can be an effective instrument in fulfilling the inner needs of educating minds.

Part II Based on the movie Every Child is Special describe the following; 1. The teacher as a person In the movie, the teacher acts as a companion and friend to Ishan. He goes beyond the expectations of the traditional teaching methodology. Trying to understand the inner reasons of Ishans incapability to learn is one of the method used by the teacher to teach. Seeing the weaknesses and making it as a tool to find methods in teaching. The teacher uses his mind to think and his heart to feel what makes Ishan a incompetent student. 2. His teaching style in reference to the report The teacher, the learner and the learning process Teaching as an activity does not exist: or at least it is meaningless to think about it in isolation. There is always an interaction between the Teacher, the Learner and the Learning Process. In the movie the incidents involving the teacher-student interactions depicted in this movie are so relevant in todays times when you get to see and hear on television at regular intervals innovative punishments like electric shocks being doled out to students. There are particularly heart rending moments like the whole initial boarding school sequence set to the song Tujhe Sab To Pata Hai Na Maa which covey the unspoken emotions of a child separated from his mother when he most needs her. 3. His attitude toward self Ram Nikumbh attitude toward self is his advantage as he go along with teaching because he himself has suffered with dyslexia. His understanding on Ishans incapacity to learn makes him aware of how he can teach Ishan effectively. He examines and investigates the learning development of his student and devise a method of instruction to suits Ishans special needs.

4. Attitude towards the learning process "Learning is sometimes defined as the acquisition of information. This is an inadequate definition. Regardless of the personal learning style of each of our students and children - our LEARN-ers learning happens in, or goes through, five stages. Acquisition is just one of those stages. Each of those stages is actually a function of neurology: each bit of information is passed from neuron to neuron until it is firmly lodged, embedded or, using computer jargon, stored in the brain. The first stage in the learning process is called priming. This is when the foundation of neural networks is established through prior learning and preparation. In computer terms, this is the software installation and the booting of the system. The brain, with its vast network of 12-15 billion neurons, is the computer hardware. Teachers may prime

their students in any of a number of ways: by recapping the previous lesson, for example; or by making sure that their students are in a proper learning mood; or perhaps simply by giving an overview of the new lesson at hand. 5. Attitude towards his students When his student is able to attach personal meaning to the new information and to make personal use of it, so that it becomes a genuine or real part of his/her life. In computer terms, this is equivalent to printing out the document. This stage is often accompanied by an illumination or an aha! experience: when the new information clicks into place inside the students brain.

6. Elements of teaching effectiveness The measure of teaching effectiveness is on the actual output of his students. Ram Nikumbh believes that goal of education is to open up new avenues of learning and appreciating life. He teaches his students based on creativity and imagination. He reinforce his students by showing them their skills.

7. Who are the philosophers in the movie? The movie is inspired by the Buddhist philosophy of actualization and enlightenment. Ideally, education is the principal tool of human growth, essential for transforming the unlettered child into a mature and responsible adult. Yet everywhere today, both in the developed world and the developing world, we can see that formal education is in serious trouble. Classroom instruction has become so routinized and pat that children often consider school an exercise in patience rather than an adventure in learning.
