come to get a better understanding of how artists from the New Directions Sculpture appreciated the human body and how they portrayed it with different types of media. Understandings: - Using other objects to form a human body - Connecting objects to show movement and fluidity Knowledge: - What a human body looks like - Connecting objects with tape - The appearance of statues Skills: - Creativity - Craftsmanship - Communication Overarching Questions: - How has sculpture been used in the past and how do we use it today? - How has sculpture changed throughout the history of art? Topical Questions: - How has the change of media helped or hurt sculpture? - How has style and fads of the past affected our art today? G = How artist appreciate the movement of the human body. R = Becoming a New Direction sculpture and create a human body. A = The students viewing and creating their own works of art in a gallery type setting. S = Forming tape, a simple product, to look like something much more distinct. P= Work together in a group to create a life size sculpture to be displayed in the classroom. S = Portraying the human body with different forms of media. Objectives of Lesson: Students will learn how to work together in a group to create a successful work of art. Students will learn how to utilize the materials they have to create a sculpture with good craftsmanship even though they may not be familiar with the materials. Students will learn how to work off of everyones creativity in the group to create a sculpture that is very pleasing to the eye. Materials and Equipment Needed: Materials in General: Packing tape (paint if wanted) Teacher Activity:

Before the lesson: The teacher will have assigned groups and laid out materials to be used on the tables. During the lesson: The teacher will have examples of New Directions Sculptures that focus on different forms of the human body. Review concepts of New Directions Sculpture The size of the sculptures were close to life-sized The sculptures were representations of real people The sculptures were always set in certain poses Introduction: We will be creating our own life size sculptures of each other using packing tape. Everyone will be assigned a group and this group will be working together for the entire project. They will select one person from the group to pose while they cover the person in tape. Make sure the pose selected is interesting to look at and pleasing to the eye. First cover the person entirely with packing tape with the sticky side up. (pastic wrap may be used for the first layer instead) The next 4 or 5 layers of tape should be sticky side down until a thick layer of tape has covered the person. Next, start to cut the tape off of the person using small safety scissors. Once the tape is off reconnect the cut areas with tape until the sculpture is complete. The final tape sculpture can be painted if desired. The students can also get creative by giving their sculptures a background or even an area to be placed on that they have also designed and decorated. Completion of lesson: All of the groups sculptures will be placed in the middle of the room where a class critique will be held on the type of poses used and how successful the sculpture turned out to be. Student Activity: The students will follow the directions that the teacher has laid out for them in order to complete the assignment. Evaluation: Students will learn how to work together in a group to create a successful work of art. All members of the group should be able to work together with cooperation throughout the lesson with little to no problems. Students will learn how to utilize the materials they have to create a sculpture with good craftsmanship even though they may not be familiar with the materials. The students sculpture should be complete (with any necessary props if encouraged) and well crafted with a smooth surface and should look like the original model. The sculpture should also able to be freestanding and need no support Students will learn how to work off of everyones creativity in the group to create a sculpture that is very pleasing to the eye. The students sculpture should be unique and well thought out. The sculpture needs to seem like it has a life of its own.
