Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australi an Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest editi on, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australi an Standards and related publications wil l be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives detail s of new publications, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE

This standard was prepared by the Association’s Committee on Methods for Examination
of Air under the direction of the Chemical Standards Board. It is one of the AS 2724 series
for the determination of particulate matter in ambient air and deals with the measurement
of particles which impinge upon vertical surfaces as a result of surface winds.
Other standards in this series are as follows:
AS 2724.1 Determination of Deposited Matter expressed as Insoluble Solids, Ash,
Combustible Matter, Soluble Solids and Total Solids.
AS 2724.2 Determination of Suspended Matter Expressed as Equivalent Black Smoke by
Filter Paper Soiling. (Used in Conjunction with AS 2509, Determination of Acid
Gases Expressed as Sulphur Dioxide).
AS 2724.3 Determination of Total Suspended Particulates (TSP)—High Volume Sampler
Gravimetric Method.
AS 2724.4 Determination of Light Scattering—Integrating Nephelometer Method*.
Impinged matter consists of particles which are airborne under the influence of surface

winds and which may collide with projections from the earth’s surface. Some common
sources of such particles are minerals processing, bulk materials handling, mining
operations, industrial processes, incineration, agricultural soil cultivation and natural sources
of windblown dust.
The material sampled by this method can be of a wide range of particle sizes depending on
wind strength. Small particles can cause a nuisance by soiling property. Larger particles can
cause weathering of property through abrasive action. Other factors such as colour, shape
and size of the particulate matter can influence the perception of nuisance.
During the preparation of this method, cognizance was taken of BS 1747.5, Methods for the
Measurement of Air Pollution Part 5, Directional Dust Gauges, with modifications to suit
Australian conditions.
