ResouRces foR pavement ReseaRch mnRoaD The Minnesota Road Research facility (MnROAD) is the worlds largest full-scale

pavement test facility, with over 4500 electronic sensors embedded in 6 miles of monitored test sections. The Minnesota Department of Transportation Office of Materials, which oversees MnROAD operations, has provided pavement engineers at the University of Minnesota with a number of opportunities in research, including internships, collaborations in research, and full-time employment with Mn/DOT. center for transportation studies CTS is a nationally prominent center that attracts more than $22 million annually for research, education, and outreach programs. The Center works with more than 75 faculty from 25 different departments in seven colleges at the University of Minnesota to help researchers develop new knowledge about transportation and share that knowledge with professionals and policymakers. pavement Research Institute The Pavement Research Institute at the University of Minnesota is a resource for research in pavement techniques, materials, and technologies. PRI develops, promotes, and carries out pavementrelated research that addresses not only state and local needs, but also regional and national needs. This development frequently includes research opportunities for faculty and students in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota.

Testing and modeling the mechanical behavior of frictional/cohesive materials; viscoelastic properties of bituminous materials

GRaDuate DeGRees master of science (m.s.) M.S. degree programs require a minimum of 30 credit hours and work toward either a research thesis or project papers. master of civil engineering (m.c.e.) M.C.E. degree programs are designed to provide additional training in civil engineering to prepare students for a higher level of professional work. Doctor of philosophy (ph.D.) The Ph.D. program requires research performance, evidenced by a Ph.D. thesis, and 45 credit hours of coursework beyond the bachelors degree (can include coursework from the M.S. degree). fIelDs of GRaDuate ReseaRch Pavement Materials - Soil/Aggregate Compaction and Stabilization - Bituminous Materials - Cementious Materials Pavement Design Pavement Rehabilitation and Maintenance Issues Specific to Cold Regions Pavements - Asphalt Binders and Low-temperature Cracking - Frost Heave and Pavement Damage Non-destructive Testing Fracture Mechanics Micromechanics Pavement Evaluation

fInancIal assIstance Financial aid is available in the form of fellowships, teaching assistant (TA), and research assistant (RA) positions to both U.S. and international students. A 50-percent appointment, 20 hours per week, includes a stipend, full tuition, and health insurance. For the 2006-07 academic year, graduate assistant stipends were approximately $1,600 per month. how to apply Students interested in applying to the Department of Civil Engineering for studies in pavements should visit www.ce.umn.edu/graduate/appl/appl_checklist.html for a helpful checklist of steps in the application process. cIvIl enGIneeRInG at the unIveRsIty of mInnesota The departments graduate program ranks 6th among the nations public universities, according to the National Research Council. Faculty members have received national and international recognition for work in steel and concrete structures, river engineering and mechanics, traffic control and safety, pavement design and performance, rock mechanics, environmental chemistry, and climate effects on water resources.
