Introduction Cells need to carry out the same basic functions as we do to sustain life. Humans have organs such as our skin, liver and heart which help us sustain life. Cells maintain their life with much smaller parts called organelles. Plant and Animal cells have a similar structure but contain some different organelles. The rationale for this project maintains that if you are able to relate things you learned in class to everyday things, youll remember it better. Its not everyday that you and your friends sit around at Starbucks discussing the rough endoplasmic reticulum. However, you probably do discuss things like cars, your homes, places to visit, etc Therefore, your task in this assignment is to relate the different cell organelles to an everyday situation or thing, using an analogy. A basic analogy is a comparison of two things. For instance, the human heart is like a pump; or the nucleus of a cell is like a brain. Your Task You will come up with an analogy for the cell of your choice (plant or animal) and its organelles. Your analogy will be represented in the form of a poster that highlights a cell and its organelles.
The Poster The poster should include at least these two parts: Part 1 The analogy. You should have a well-drawn or constructed picture of your analogy. For example, if you were doing a cell city, you would include a picture of a city and each of the parts of your analogy as well as a brief 2-3 sentence description of each organelle analogy. (City Hall, Roads, Power Plant, Boundaries etc) Part 2 - Structure and function table on the back of the poster that indicates a relationship between the organelle and its function within the cell. In other words, name the organelle and tell what it does. Also, indicate whether the cell is plant or animal. For a small bonus, include a picture of each organelle (separately, or include a big picture of a real plant/animal cell with its parts correctly labeled) Summary: The analogy is the major poster. The part that will be displayed. (Part 1) Structure and Function Table located on the back of the poster. (Part 2) To help guide the poster expectations see below for detailed rubric.
1 little or no care taken with presentation of poster 1 several missing required elements 1 several incorrect definitions
2 evidence of some planning and care in presentation 2 few missing required elements 2 few incorrect definitions
4 care and attention to detail beyond the norm 4 extra information 4 fully correct with extra info 4 poster info is eye catching with flare for design
