1. Describe and evaluate what Pfizer is doing.

Ans :

Pfizer organization wish to be more effecient and effective. Most of Pfizer's Harvard MBA staff just do the menial tasks not based on their talents. the average employee do the support work at 20-40% ( creating documents, type notes, and others) while only 60-80 percent doing the knowledge work. The highest-level employees were affected too. to solve the problems,Cohen tweak the procees and created OOF( office of the future) in Ms outlook that connected to an outsourcing company where a single worker in india receives the request and assign it to a team. the team leader e-mail back the cost specification for the job description, and the employees can decide it. the effect time spent on analysis of data has been cut around half,the financial benefit are also impressive.

2. What structural implications good and bad does this approach have?(

Think in term of the six organizational design elements.)

Ans : it was Decentralization implications, because the employees can say yes or no to the team leader cost for the job request. It has good effect for the Pfizer time consuming job and financial benefits. The bad effect was the employees depending on the knowledge outsourcing companies.

3. Do you think this arrangement would work for other types of organizations? Why or why not? Ans : it can work with other types of organizations as long as they can tweak the process to support the organization like this case. But it wont work for the special organization because only the employees that can do the specialization.

4. What role do you think organizational structure plays in an organizations efficiency and effectiveness? Explain.

Ans :

Organizational structure role effectiveness are concentrate efforts jobs for targets and enhance planning and controlling. And The efficiency role are clarify what we should work, dividing job, avoid conflicts and misuse resources.

Work specialization - the degree to which tasks in the organization are subdivided into separate jobs. Division of labor and the early auto assembly plants in the US are examples of this.

Departmentalization - the basis by which jobs are grouped together. The most common ways of doing this is by function (e.g., manufacturing, marketing) type of product, geography or territory (e.g. east coast office, west coast office)

Chain of command - the unbroken line of authority that extends from the top of the organization to the lowest echelon and clarifies who reports to whom.

Span of control - the number of subordinates a manager can efficiently and effectively direct.

Centralization/Decentralization - the degree to which decision making is concentrated at a single point in the organization. Decentralization is when decision discretion is pushed down to lower-level employees.

Formalization - the degree to which jobs within the organization are standardized.
