from page 9 of $82,000, of negotiating up to six noninstructional day furloughs for a maximum savings of $996,636, and reducing fourthand fifth-grade teachers from 33 to 30 by removing the guarantee for students to attend their home school for a savings of $298,008. Its basically come to a point where were in this situationI know the threshold for other districts that have been suffering for so long that they will be unable to fund education. They simply cannot do it, Manaster said. You cannot teach chemistry in a 60-person classroom with one teacher, so I just feel like we were potentially doing a lot of work there that we will not need to do because I have some faith that one of two things will happen: They will realize they cannot just put this on education or we will find another revenue stream. Chris Bushee, a member of BHEAs negotiating team, said it was too early to speculate about furloughs. Im just hopeful that a lot of the revenue options that were looked at last [week] will be put into play because any time you can generate more revenue, that reduces the amount of cuts that you would need to make to balance the budget, Bushee said. In June, the Board of Education approved an agreement with the teachers union that provided for salary increases for the first time in three years. Crescent Hotels remodel designs sent back for refinement

The Architectural Commission has assigned a subcommittee to work with the Crescent Hotel to revise its remodel designs, which propose reconfiguring the hotels outdoor dining area, relocating its entrance to Brighton Way and installing new signage. The commission reviewed the plans at its meeting last week on July 18, when it determined a subcommittee could be effective in helping the applicant gain approval. We felt that it needed to be sent back for restudy because it inadequately solved the problems that they had set out to resolve, Commission Chair Zale Richard Rubins said. One was the separate identity of the restaurant from the hotel. The other was signage elements they utilized that didnt quite fit the building. In June, the Planning Commission approved the Crescent Hotels application to relocate its entrance, but it did not approve installation of an outdoor bar on the patio facing Existing Crescent Hotel Crescent Drive. Although the hotels conditional use permit previously prohibited awnings, the Planning Commission decided to permit awnings at the hotel, with the condition that the Architectural Commission has the opportunity to review them. Currently, the hotels entrance is located on Crescent Drive, requiring guests to walk through the middle of the restaurants outdoor patio to access the hotel. The Crescent Hotel has proposed moving its entrance to Brighton Way, and installing landscaping and a large sign identifying the restaurant in front of the Crescent Drive patio. Rubins said the commission requested the applicant reduce the size of the proposed sign and suggested moving it toward the restaurants proposed Crescent Drive entrance on the right side of the building. On Brighton Way, the applicant proposed a small plaque identifying the hotel to the left of the entrance doorway, with an overhang above. Another blade identification sign, a vertical banner-style sign hanging perpendicular to the buildings wall, was proposed near Rendering presented to Architectural the corner of Brighton and Crescent. Their stated goal was to establish two distinct senses of arrival, one for the restaurant and Commission one for the hotel, and we did not feel they achieved that, Rubins said. The Architectural Commission began assigning subcommittees to help new restaurant applicants gain approval within 70 days, based on an initiative that was spearheaded by Mayor Willie Brien in 2011 when he became vice mayor. We decided if we can do it for restaurants, we can try and achieve the same thing for every project, Rubins said. We felt that this process of [having a] subcommittee would help them stay on course and in the end help them achieve their goals and ours. Crescent Hotel General Manager Susan Cronin did not return a phone call from the Weekly. Last week was the commissions first meeting with five members, Rubins said. The City Council voted last year to reduce the commission from seven to five members in the interest of efficiency. Allen Rennett and Fran Cohens terms concluded earlier this month. Walter B. Meyers term was also set to end, but he was asked to stay on until the commission finalizes approval of his replacement, since the commission is required to have a registered architect among its members. We thought we were very successful in keeping the professionalism up and quite frankly we went through the projects very efficiently, Rubins said. However, we sorely miss those two people [Rennett and Cohen]. Last weeks meeting was Rubins first meeting in his second term as chair. He was previously chair from 2010-2011.
