Corona Police Department 2011 Citizens Academy

The Corona Police Citizens Academy was established to promote an understanding of the Departments operations. Participants gain an overall knowledge of the Corona Police Department, the organization as well as the service and response to calls in the community. The Academy also provides an opportunity for participants to meet the men and women who provide law enforcement services in the community. The Academys curriculum is designed to provide an inside look at various operations. This includes the areas of patrol, traffic, vice / narcotics, domestic violence, forensics and much more. Instruction is provided by police officers and civilian personnel who specialize in these given areas. The Academy meets once a month for two hours over a ten month period. The Academy starts each January and ends in October. A diploma is awarded to each participant who successfully completes the course. The department would like to invite employees immediate family, spouses, significant others and friends age 16 and older. Classes will be held at the Corona Police Department located at 730 Corporation Yard Way, Corona. The first class starts January 19th at 6:00 PM. Corona Police Citizens Academy Course Syllabus 2011

January 19th Welcome Police Department Organization The presentation will cover registration, course overview, department organization, rank and file and mission. February 16th Youth Diversion Team The presentation will cover a brief history of the juvenile justice system, how the Corona Police Department processes juvenile offenders and how the Youth Diversion Program attempts to change illegal behavior in our communitys youth. March 16th Forensics This class is designed to familiarize the participants with the role of the Forensic Technician; common crime scene investigation tools, techniques, and tasks; and to provide specific information on the equipment and capabilities of the Corona Police Department. The participants will also be shown, by way of a PowerPoint presentation, how forensic investigation techniques are used in an actual homicide crime scene April 20th Traffic Division The traffic division will present an overview of traffic enforcement in the City. The class will cover the various functions of the traffic division including our Collision Reconstruction Team. There will also be an overview on how officers determine whos at fault in traffic collisions. May 20th Canine Unit The presentation will cover the history and purpose of using canines for police work. The canine team members will give insight on the different ways police dogs are used in police work. This will also include a demonstration.

June 15th Force Options The departments range staff will cover firearm safety and training. Students will also participate in a use of force simulator to get an inside look at use of force decisions. July 20th Dispatch Radio The departments emergency dispatchers will present an overview of the role of public safety dispatchers and radio protocol. The presentation also includes an interactive base scenario, where participants interact with dispatchers via the radio simulating calls for service. August 17th Crime Analysis and Detective Bureau The Department crime analysis will present an overview of how California works together to solve various crimes. Crime mapping is used as a tool to identify crime patterns and trends. Crime analysis helps departments identify suspects whose criminal behavior matches MO with other cities. September 21th Narcotics The Corona Police vice Narcotics Intelligence will present an overview on recognizing different illicit drugs and explained the different types of drug paraphernalia that police officers come across. VNI will display a drug recognition board and a small suitcase full of different kinds of drug paraphernalia. October 19th Domestic Violence This two hour course is aimed at helping volunteers understand the dynamics of domestic violence, the patrol officers responsibilities as a first responder to domestic violence calls, what occurs after the initial report is processed and the court process. They will also understand an overview of the Corona Police Departments Policy on Domestic Violence and how the Police Department interacts with Alternatives to Domestic Violence in trying to end the cycle of abuse. November 16th Graduation There will be a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner followed with certificates being presented to Citizen Academy Graduates.
