Required Course Catalog Description:

EE-213 Electronics 1 Credit (3-0) This is the first course of electronics sequence. It explains the basic concepts of semi-conductor diode and its current-voltage relationship. Various applications of junction diode are discussed. Various types of diodes are also explained. Bipolar Junction Transistor and Field-Effect Transistor are evolved as two PN-junction devices. Relations of various currents and voltages in these transistors are explained in detail. The effect of temperature on these semiconductor devices is highlighted. Similarly the working principles of Op-Amps and MOSFETS are also taught. Their critical parameters impacting design of amplifiers are talked about in details. A variety of applications of various types of BJTs and MOSFETS transistors are dealt with. The course is directly supported with lab experiments emplacing the design principles. Aims: To familiarise students with bipolar junction and field effect transistors, and to introduce a number of important circuit applications of these devices; to develop basic skills in linear circuit analysis. To give students an understanding of the analysis and design of common 'active' circuits such as those involving operational amplifiers and transistors. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, students should be able to understand: (a)The Operational Amplifier (opamp) - the characteristics of the opamp - the mathematical operations that can be achieved with opamps - feedback and stability; gain-bandwidth limitations. (b) Basic concepts of semi-conductor diode and its current-voltage relationship. Various applications of junction diodes. (b) Explain qualitatively the operation of all of the following: common-emitter (or common-source) amplifier, active load, current mirror, differential amplifier, emitter follower. (c) Determine the operating modes and bias conditions of transistors in the above configurations and in other cimple circuits (d) Understand the small-signal models of BJTs and FETs at low frequencies, and use them to determine the small-signal parameters for the above configurations and for other simple transistor circuits; (d) Determine the transient behaviour of circuits containing transistor switches with reactive loads.. Syllabus: 1) The Ideal Op Amp, Inverting configuration and its applications, Non-inverting configuration, examples of Op Amp circuits. 2) Diodes, terminal characteristics of junction diodes; Physical operation of diodes; Analysis of diode circuits, small signal model and its applications; Zener diodes, Rectifier circuits, Limiting & Clamping circuits 3) The bipolar junction transistor (BJT): physical structure and modes of operation; common-emitter amplifier; bias stabilisation; use as a switch; Small-signal analysis: basic principles; small signal models for 2-terminal devices; BJT small signal model and Early effect; frequency response of AC-coupled circuits. 4) The MOSFET: physical structure and modes of operation; small-signal models; common-source amplifier; active loads; the body effect. Evaluation Methods: Quizzes, Assignments, Sessional exams, Final exam. Prepared by: Lecturer Tamkeen Bhatti. Revised: 30/10/2009 Grading: Quiz and Assignments 15% Mid Term 35% Final 50%
