Floridas Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,331,300 in June 2012, up 70,900 jobs compared to a year ago. June
was the 23rd consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for three years. The
industry gaining the most jobs was professional and business services (+33,700 jobs, +3.2 percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included trade, transportation, and utilities (+24,200 jobs, +1.6 percent); private
education and health services (+19,300 jobs, +1.8 percent); leisure and hospitality (+19,200 jobs, +2.0
percent); financial activities (+10,900 jobs, +2.3 percent); and manufacturing (+3,000 jobs, +1.0 percent).

These industry job gains were partially due to increases in employment services; clothing and accessory
stores; ambulatory health care services; food services and drinking places; real estate; and food
manufacturing.

Industries losing jobs over the year included construction (-24,600 jobs, -7.4 percent), total government
(-10,100 jobs, -0.9 percent), other services (-4,600 jobs, -1.5 percent), and information (-100 jobs,
-0.1 percent).

These industry job losses were partially due to declines in specialty trade contractors; state government;
repair and maintenance; and telecommunications.
Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

In June 2012, Monroe County (5.0 percent) had the states lowest unemployment rate, followed by Walton
County (5.4 percent), Okaloosa County (6.1 percent), and Franklin County (6.2 percent). Many of the
counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of government
employment.

Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (14.2 percent) in Florida in June 2012, followed by
Flagler County (12.3 percent), St. Lucie County (11.8 percent), and Indian River County (11.3 percent).
Seasonal declines in agriculture and related industries contributed to the high unemployment rate in Hendry
County. There were fifteen Florida counties with double-digit unemployment rates in June, up from eight in
May.
Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Eleven metro areas of the 22 in the state had over-the-year job gains in June 2012. The areas with the
largest gains were Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+23,300 jobs, +2.1 percent), Miami-Miami BeachKendall (+10,800 jobs, +1.1 percent), and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+9,800 jobs, +1.0 percent).

Of the metro areas with job declines, the largest losses were in Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent (-3,500 jobs,
-2.2 percent), Tallahassee (-2,800 jobs, -1.7 percent), Gainesville (-2,000 jobs, -1.6 percent), and Port St.
Lucie (-2,000 jobs, -1.7 percent).
Note: These unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from
Florida's Unemployment Compensation tax records and other data.
New procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further
information, go to: http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm

The mission of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is to promote economic prosperity for all Floridians and businesses
