ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Karnataka is a state located in southwest India neighboring Kerala and Tamil Nadu to the South, Andhra Pradesh to the East, Maharashtra to the North and the beach paradise Goa to the West. It ranges from the middle of the Deccau Plateau to the west coast, covering 5.83% of the total geographical area of India. There are pleasantly cool highlands in Karnataka, such as Bangalore and Mysore where people come to spend the summer.

Bangalore, an anglicized version of the towns name in Kannada Bengaluru, is the capital of the Karnataka state. With 5,840,000 people it is Indias third most populous city. Bangalore is located on the Deccau Plateau at an average height of 3,018ft (920m) above sea level, which is quite peculiar. The city is located in the very south-eastern part of Karnataka close to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

tinct dry and wet seasons and an average temperature of 18C. Combined with the relatively high elevation, one can visit Bangalore any time of the year and enjoy the pleasant climate. Yet, it is advisable to avoid the monsoon season, which drops from July to September, with regular rainfalls usually in the evenings. In a sad contrast to its refreshing climate, the city is nowadays going rather the polluted path to heat and dust. From the historical perspective, all major ruling dynasties in Karnataka left their imprint also in Bangalore starting with the Western Ganga Dynasty, the Cholas, the Hoysalas up to the Vijayanagar Empire when the modern day Bangalore was found in the 16th century. After 1799 Ban galore was incorporated into the British Indian Empire and was administered by the rulers of Mysore Kingdom. With several intervals, the main residency of the Mysore State was from 1867 until 1947 continually in Bangalore. The older parts of Bangalore - though a bit crowded - are livable, especially, if one seeks a regional cultural flavor. On the whole, the modern town areas like Jayanagar, Koramangala, Sadashivanagar and Indiranagar are cosmopolitan. The latest layouts are beginning to show a sprinkling of people from several countries, mainly due to the IT boom.

Bangalore, nicknamed the Silicon Valley of India, is a major economic and cultural hub and the fastest growing metropolis in India. It is home to many of the most well-recognized colleges and research institutes in India. Numerous public sector heavy industries, software companies, aerospace, telecommunications, and defense organizations are located here. Beside this, it is home to over 10,000 dollar millionaires and about 60,000 super-rich people. Throughout the year the city is blessed with salubrious climate promoting good health. Bangalore Palace
A glance of a Bangalore palace transfers you over several seas to the old continent to England where a replica of the Bangalore palace is standing () or is it the other way round? In fact, the palace in Bangalore is the one playing the ape here, while being a smaller replica of its original in Windsor. Though not that spectacular in its parameters and lacking the snowy white facade of its Windsor sibling, Bangalore palace can still attract visitors and bring into life the almost 150 years old British imperial history. -Hana, Czech Republic consists of granite seats that are covered with a fluorescent blue ceramic tiles. A decorated staircase leads toward the Durbar Hall, where the kings used to address the assembly. The palace has gothic windows made from a stained glass. Some of the well known music bands: rock stars and heavy metal legends like Sting, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Deep Purple, and Bryan Adams have concerted here. The style of Bangalore Palace is very different than others. Its British style makes it more extraordinary. In Taiwan, our president castle and some department buildings are in Japanese style. Vidhana Soudha
To be honest, it is a mistake to waste such building on a parliament! I mean yes, it is important and so, but you cannot just forbid people from enjoying such beauty. It is literally a forbidden fruit, and I will not be surprised if someday I read about someone who broke into the place just for the sake of enjoying the view from a closer point. It is surprising to know that it is only about 60 years old! My first impression was that it is one of those 17th century palaces. Even though it is surrounded with armed guards, the Vidhana Soudha is tempting you to enter, and I was not really afraid to do so until I reached the check point conclusion? I returned empty handed, with a lot of disappointment of not getting closer to that wonder. - Ahmed, Bahrain

Soudha has four floors above and one floor below ground level and sprawls across an area of 700 by 350ft.

Noteworthy is that it is the largest legislative building in India. Its eastern face has a porch with 12 granite columns 40ft tall. Leading to the foyer is a flight of stairs with 45 steps more than 200ft wide. The central dome, 60ft in diameter, is crowned by a likeness of the Indian national emblem. The cost of the construction at those years was just about 17.5 million Rs. But annual maintenance is what matters now as they cost more than 20 million Rs. and that includes repairs, paintings, and other miscellaneous expenses.

So as every water surface breaks and pleasantly livens up the otherwise concrete sea, so does the Ulsoor Lake, one of the biggest and oldest city lakes in Bangalore. FORT

Introduction

Map: KSTDC

Chitradurga Fort, a place where solitude can be reached, a symbol of resistance and multicultural integrity. When entering this site, your eyes see immediately many marvels that give birth to a story blowing your mind away. While climbing the resistant mountain, trying to reach up to the skies, a feeling of strength and solidity emerges with many other emotions of glory and fascination dragged up by that intense blowing of air. In addition to its purity, it gives the feeling of symmetrical balance. This engages a relaxed state of mind and builds up strong will. - Ayoub, Morocco

Chitradurga Fort, 240km from Bangalore, is the biggest fort in Karnataka (32km2). Hidden between the rocks, the fort gives the impression of being one with the mountain; whose grey granite was used for its construction. The fort is built in a slope, and a horizon view from its top is well worth climbing up the serpentines.

18

The Chitradurga Fort is one of the most interesting sites in the State of Karnataka. Its has a great blend of natural beauty and architectural excellence. Being there takes you on a journey back in time to where Indians leaders were resisting fearlessly against repetitive greedy attacks. Yet, the religious and natural components cover the fort with a halo of harmony and serendipity. That halo can also be tracked to the yoga practices around the fort. Honestly, even if I didnt know how to meditate, it will not be so hard to do that in such an inspiring piece of history. - Ahmed, Bahrain

The history testifies to the visitors impression, that Chitradurga went through lots of destabilizations and survived many wars. The beginning of the forts construction dates back to 1562 when the Vijayanagar Empire (which spread

from the 14th until the 16th century over the lands of present Karnataka) was facing a series of Bahamani attacks. Although the Vijayanagar Empire was soon defeated in 1565, the fort construction continued under local Nayakas tribes` commands for the next 211 years, and during that period it was extended considerably. The fort was never conquered, yet, it was lost by treason in 1779 to General Hyder Ali of the Maysur Kingdom. 20 years later, the British defeated Hyder Alis son Tipu Sultan, taking over the fort without any bloodshed to make it the strongest line of defence to Mysores northern border at that time. The fort reflects the influence of both its history and natural setting. Muslim arches decorate the walls of the fort - which literally grows out of the site - and whose simple geometric signs like semi-circles, conics or triangular shapes are inspired

19

by the surrounding nature.

While it was occupied by different inhabitants from different backgrounds, the Fort kept its significant religious weight. There still are 18 temples between the forts walls, with Uchcchangamma temple being the most important. People still come to pray and pay homage to Subramania, the cobra god, and Anjaneya, the monkey god. Once on the top, one can enjoy the gentle breeze while relaxing in the air house, or observe Hindus perfecting in a rather contortionist manner their yoga skills. I came to India only a couple of days before that I spent together with others in the bustling city of Bangalore. As I was going through a rather intensive cultural shock at that time, our first stop-off at the Chitradurga Fort after long hours spent on the bus was kind of a rescue for me. Chitradurga bewitched me. As our guide had a very profound knowledge of that

place, all at once I got a huge portion of information about the history of the fort as well as the glorious empires ruling Karnataka over centuries, so that I could actually process them properly only in the upcoming days. Anyway, the richness of the places history was striking to me; it literally left my eyes wide open and aroused my curiosity for the rest of the excursion. Chitradurga was a place where I could breathe freely. After a little unease leaning on me since we had left Bangalore, it was like a dose of fresh air to me that is blowing at vast speed on its very top. Furthermore, once we had walked through the maze of the fort walls, climbed the winding path and crossed the impressive square style open space with temples and aged trees, I was entirely fascinated by the endless view from the top into the lowlands around the Chitradurga hill; the one I had only experienced in Russia so far. - Hana, Czech Republic

Hampi is Vijayanagar`s architectural masterpiece. It holds a big spiritual value in the hearts of Hindus. Hampi can dress up in different dresses. Its generous beauty, every part of Hampi`s land participates in that continuously variable phase changing. Starting from Vitthala temple, symbol of a typical victory of good versus evil, one can experience a fabulous review on this place, which is hardly known to people. I like to see ruins. They give me such an immense feeling of the power of time. -Ayoub, Morocco

Once upon a time, Hampi was the former capital of the once mighty Vijayanagar Kingdom (1336-1565). Today it profits mainly from its grandiose history. Fortunately, the monuments are rather well preserved, so that one can clearly read the history written on the temples walls. To see Vijayanagar`s architectural brilliance, one should not miss this small village, which by its busy market streets has a charm of its own. In a relatively small area in the vicinity of the Tungabhadra River, one can enjoy Vijayanagar monuments in its abundance. Even though they can be comfortably visited on one day, these forgotten ruins are definitely worth a longer stay; a microscopic observation would grasp every admirable detail. Hampi is one of the two UNIESCO Heritage Sites in Karnataka. It is an important must visit site not only for foreign travelers; but to all Indian citizens, especially Karnataka residents. Hampi is situated in the vicinity of the now regional centre of Hospet (13km).

From the pavilion in front of the sanctum you can see the Hampi bazaar, which can make for a good break before entering the Virupaksha Temple situated at the end of the main street.

Right next to the Badavilinga is to be found a monolith of Lord Vishnu in his fourth incarnation as Lakshmi Narasimha. Virupaksha Temple

Virupaksha Temple dating back to the Hoysala period. Visitors can enter the temple from the eastern, southern as well as northern side. This place composes of a middle hall (Navaranga) and an inner Sanctum (Shukanasi and Garbhagudi).

As the eleven stories tower is visible from distance, finding the way to this Hampi highlight is simple. The main bazaar street takes you right in front of the 165ft high Bistappaya Tower. It is not known who built this magnificent tower neither is it known when was it built. Once at the tower you will definitely notice the monkeys that live here in large numbers. Upon passing through the tower gate, you enter the temple compound that houses the oldest Hampi temple, which is the Virupaksha temple. There are two towers in the temple complex with the second one named Raya tower. It honors the coronation of king Krishnadevaraya. Walking through the Raya tower gate takes visitors into the second compound with Pataleshwara, Muktinarasimha and Suryanarayana Temples. The temple in front of the main tower gate is the

The deity of the Virupaksha Temple is Lord Virupaksha. The mythology has it, that a girl called Pampadevi married Shiva, so that their son could destroy the demons here. Shiva remained here in the form of lingam, while Pampadevis name can be traced down in the towns name Pampapathi, and thereby Pampakshetra or Hampi. Still to the north of the Virupaksha Temple there are two temples waiting for the visitor: one for Pampadevi and the other for Bhuvaneshwari. A drop to the temples dark chamber is necessary; to see an upside down image of a tower, whose shadow created by the light coming through the hole in the eastern wall falls on the opposite western wall, demonstrating the application of combined advanced science of optics and architecture. Its worth mentioning that theres another temple that holds the name of this temple, and its located in Pattadakal, which will be covered later on.

If Chitradurga was a starter, Hampi on the following day was a rather filling main course. Hampi has lost nothing from its medieval glamour and bright shine. It is a place, where the touch of wonderful stone engravings decorating the temple walls revives the history that is following ones footsteps. Beside this, I found Hampi in stark contrast with the kind of architecture I am familiar with from my European background. The Hampi architectural pearls are set in remarkable scenery of palm groves and bizarre granite boulders strewn all around that give an impression of being just ready-made by the gods for the construction of Hindu temples. Thus, the granite temples and sanctuaries evoked in me an image of a chameleon perfectly fitting into his environs, what is in fact a fulfilment of Hindu harmony between man and nature. While travelling throughout Karnataka State, visitors will get the chance to visit a variety of temples. Although sometimes one gets the feeling that it is just going to be the same thing over and over again, tourists should think twice before considering skipping some of the wonders this State has to offer. Many different cultures that influenced the region gave it an exceptional character, which is reflected by the temples of Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami.

For instance, just a brief look at the turtle hold by a group of birds, first carvings on the round outside the Durg temple (not Durga, as it is often referred to), gives a timeless message, a common moral shared by Humanity: Long time ago, the turtle was jealous of the birds because they, by flying, could see much

The existence of Aihole came after a tale of honour and bloodshed. One of Vishnus incarnations, Saint Parusharama, after taking revenge of his fathers murder is believed to have washed his axe in the river Malaprabha so that the whole water became red. Local ladies, seeing the reddish river, started to cry Ai! Ai! Hole. The name of the local village - Aihole - comes from that exclama-

more than it could, so the birds decided to take it for a ride. Held by a couple of animals, the turtle had to depend completely on them and trust them utterly. The talkative pair couldnt open their mouth; otherwise, the turtle would fall down and die. The sense of this story is simple, behind the lines it shows you how, in certain moments of life, you have to adapt, accept the consequences of your choice and live with your limitations.

Durg temple complex, literally the fort, was built based on the scheme of a human body, where the entrance symbolizes the legs, the tower represents the face and the function hall embodies the stomach. As the temple is located far from the water, in the entrance we can find carvings in the shape of a turtle - representing Emuna river, and a crocodile - symbol of Gangha river, placed there in order to give pilgrims and visitors the purity of water.

Influenced by Buddhist architecture, the temple is dedicated to Suria, the Sun God. After Puja, the pilgrims take two rounds around the idol, another around the temple. In the second round, visitors can admire the carvings on the windows and niches, full of symbols and stories. Most of these carvings are related to Lords Vishnu and Shiva. In this same complex of temples, there are also the Navadurga, Ladkhen and Goda Temples. Basically at the beginning, the temples were nameless and served as houses to many people. Then they were named after the residents. While roaming around Durg Complex, have a look at a 50 Rs note. Does the building of the Parliament on the back side remind you something? Yes, the shape is inspired by the Durg Temple construction.

The two largest temples are Virupaksha and Mallikarjuna, both built in Dravidian style during an impressively short period of 12 years (733-745). The construction of these masterpieces was ordered by the twin sisters Lokamahadevi and Traiklokadevi, the wives of King Vikramaditya II. The victory pillar situated outdoors between temples is covered with mystique and enigmatic sanscrit inscriptions. Inside of the Virupakasha temple one can find interesting representation of right handed Ganesha, the symbol of purity, carved on the second column to the left from the entrance. Ordinary Ganesha figures show him with his left hand raised, as this particular image does not require any special, clear environment and can be kept in every house.

Kudalasangama
It is one of the most majestic holy places where you can discover relationship between mind, soul and body. The temple has differently sculptured pillars which symbolize different parts of the temple character. The inspiration that one gets from the way these pillars were sculptured is that it revives a defensive protective profile for the gate of the temple. The river seemed to exist already with the rise of the temple, since it looks very much related to the temple. Even the stairs that lead to the surface of the river show the emerging importance of the river for the temple. People clean their sins there, after opening up their hearts and souls for healing. As long as the river flows, it takes away many of the peoples sins. - Ayoub, Morocco the founder of the Lingayat faith - reposes here; making the place a center of pilgrimage. The river, nonetheless, is one of the longest rivers in India. It merges with its tributaries Malaprabha and Gattiprabha rivers at its right bank near Kudalasangama, where it is worth to take a boat ride on the rivers junction and admire the natural surroundings. This place provides a delight, not only for its particular natural beauty; but also for the important spiritual weight it carries. It is a very tranquil, and an offbeat place, where one can find mostly pilgrims and/or locals praying or simply enjoying views from the pier over the river.

At the bank of the Krishna River (1300km) rests the Sri Sangameshwara Temple. Built in the Chalukyan style, the temple has a special significance for the Lingayat believers as the holy soul of Basavanna -

I honestly cannot describe what I felt while facing this nature wonder; I had a mixture of feelings: admire, peace, and pleasure. The water falls with rhythm; not the one you hear in meditation CDs, but more like a living rhythm, as if nature was singing in a sweet and smooth loud tone. I am certainly returning to that place again, and next time Im taking my meditation kit along. - Ahmed, Bahrain season (between July and September) is great as well, while the water falls hard and creates a bright rainbow every now and then. Another feature of the falls is that it does not stream on the rock below, but rather falls directly (proper naming of such phenomena is untiered waterfalls), resulting in a louder roar, and an incredible atmosphere in the neighboring area. Jog Falls also known as Gerusoppaa Falls powers the hydro-electric generators at the nearby Linganmakki Dam across the river Sharavathi. It was commissioned by Sri Veerappa Moily, the Minister of education back then, and blessed by Rt. Ref. Dr. William L. DMello, Bishop of Karwas. The temple spins its own yarn which, in this case, instead of worlds made is as if of French lace. Every single millimeter of the surface just yells to pass on its story, enlighten with moral and catch your eye with its splendor. Overwhelming kingdom of detail! A proof that the faith inspires, arouses profoundly hidden levels of ingenuity, makes the artist, literally, moving the mountains and overcoming all limitations. Undeniably one of magnum opus of a man created in the name of god. - Gloria, Poland Hoysaleshwara Temple is the biggest in existence, and lays 16km from Belur. It was built by King Vishnuvardhana in 1121 for his wifes private use. It is said that it took 105 years to complete the construction. However, Delhi sultan dynasty attacked the temple in 14th century and completely destroyed it. Therefore, the city where the temple is got its current name Halebeed which means ruined city. Back to the temple, two similar buildings can be found; where each building

has stunning stone pillars made on a potters wheel. Seeing thousands of sculptures lined up close together on the walls of the buildings, it seems as if they were united as antiquities. With an image of a dancing Ganesha at the south gate to another image of Ganesha on the north gate, the overall number of sculptures of such images reach up to 240 images, topping the list of the largest number of sculptured images in any other single temple in India. Note that the Temple was not built by the King himself, but under the supervision of his minister Ketamalla, who also built the Belur temple and the Mahabaleshwar temple at Chamundi Hills, near Mysore.

While roaming between the walls of the temple, the eye cannot help but to notice the sexual sculptures on those walls. Well, there is an argument in the modern world that prosperity leads to increased sexual activity. And as far as this argument goes, it touches the necessity of sexual sculptures in the temples. So while a party stands for living a luxurious life-style, another defends mass sexual education. There are other voices rising up with different opinions, such as: It is part of Hinduism practices that connect to god, as well as a renewal for the out-of-date interests of believers; just to bridge the boredom gap of routine in house holders lives. Yet nothing is certain, as all opinions are supported with good defensive points.

In the town of Belur, we visited another two temples, Chennakashava and Halebeedu Temples. After seeing so many temples in Hindu style, it was pretty much the same experience. The temples are heritage places, and serve more as museums than as active places, therefore you wont experience too much of spirituality here. But it is a fact, that these objects are significant masterpieces. The surface of these temples is decorated with small statues of gods all around as a long story with a lot to say. -Erika, Slovakia

Manjusha Museum & Car Museum

This place keeps many cars from the early 1900s. We were surprised to find the car which was used by Mahatma Gandhi. All cars which were in the museum were kept clean and in a good condition. If you are interested in cars, it is worth to stop by at this museum. - Ken, Japan

The Manjusha Museum is one of the most important artifact museums in the whole state of Karnataka. Situated just 100m away from Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple, it was also founded by Veerendra Heggade. This amazing collection of weapons, paintings, domestic vessels, ritual objects, manuscripts, ornaments and contemporary items is well preserved. The collection itself is divided into nine sections:

The Touch of Class - dealing with sculptures made of stone and metal The Sacred Touch - referring to the worship and temples The Touch of Hands - indicating the art of craftsmen, who produced items for the daily use like vessels or jars The Touch of Valour - showing the different kinds of weapons like axes, daggers or swords The Touch of Beauty - related to the beauty of people,

Nowadays there are around 40 different vintage cars given to the museum as donations, all of which are in a very good working condition. Jain pilgrims come from all over the country to worship Bahubali, as this Jain saint symbolizes the supreme knowledge of Karma and strength of meditation. History tells us that when Bahubali was about to kill his brother with his powerful arm, he broke the fight and renounced the territories he could win. After a lot of reflection, he decided to take up the way of meditation. The uniqueness of this renunciation, which marks the beginning of Bahubali`s quest for the knowledge of Karma, is the spiritual base of this site, in which one can feel, through the dignity of skinhead pilgrims and the silence that fills the air, the deeper ways of Jain religion.

Built in 1966 in Karkala, the statue of Bhagavan Bahubali, the Jain saint, was brought to Dharmasthala under the orders of Rathnavarma Heggade, father of Veerendra Heggade. It arrived in 1975 and took its place on the top of the hill at the entrance of the town. The monument is a huge edifice that goes up to 20m high and enjoys a spectacular view

Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple

In the early morning we went to Swami Temple. Many people come here to pray, and they have to strip their shirt to show respect to the gods which was really impressive. It took us approximately 5 minutes to see all the statues of gods. - Ken, Japan Nowadays, the temple is run by the 21st generation of the Heggade family, which is the hereditary administrator of the temple. The legend has it that after the angels visited his house; Barmana Heggade built the temples and started to give donations to people in need. Note that the place stands for tolerance and confluence of diverse Hindu traditions. While the priests come from the Brahmin caste, the temple

is administered by the Jainists, an ancient Indian religion following the philosophy of non-violence to all human beings.

The temple itself is an unforgettable treat. On top of wonderful Hindu gods sculptures it houses a Shiva lingam brought to Dharmasthala from the Kadri temple near Mangalore.

The dining hall accompanied with the food served during the lunch and dinner times are all going under the umbrella of unconditional charity, which according to Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, the presiding Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala temple, is supposed to be practiced in its purest form, and therefore no seeker goes empty handed from Dharmasthala.

As the Kodagu district hides in forests, visitors are eternally on the search for its pearls of natural beauty and purity. Once getting to Bhagamandala, a small village in the middle of nowhere, one can escape the crowded city life, enjoy and reach up the solitude that would heal ones soul and pump back clean blood through the veins. buildings, sprawling gardens and tree lined boulevards. Mysore is especially famous for the festivities that take place during the Dasara festival when the city receives a large number of tourists.

In a country with such a deep faith in religion and tradition, it hardly surprises that even Mysore draws its name from the Hindu mythology. The name Mahisuru later Maisuru recalls the legendary demon Mahishasura who used to live here, in the near Chamundi Hills.

First and foremost, Mysore has a good chunk of the state`s royal history, as it has been the capital of the Mysore kingdom for almost five centuries. Serving initially as a vassal state of the Vijayanagar Empire, the Mysore kingdom superseded it in the 16th century and established itself as an independent powerful kingdom in the southern Deccan. Paradoxically, the Mysore kingdom experienced its peak days during the de facto reign of two Muslim generals in service of the Wodeyar family, Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, during the 18th century. After two unsuccessful rounds of the Anglo-Mysore wars, the British restored the Wodeyars to power and the royal family continued to rule Mysore as a princely state until India gained independence in 1947.

In fact, Mysore is all but myth. The second largest city in Karnataka (800,000) and the headquarters of the Mysore district is a perfect place to start exploring Karnataka. Reaching Mysore (146km from Bangalore) is comfortable due to the newly laid world-class four-lane Bangalore-Mysore Expressway. Mysore offers an unbelievable variety of places to visit reaching from magnificent palaces to majestic

93

In a certain way, modern Mysore follows the footsteps of Bangalore. It is the second largest software exporter in Karnataka with many campuses and research institutes boosting the citys innovative potential. Furthermore, Mysore excels in weaving, sandalwood carving and bronze processing, not to forget about renowned Mysore silk saris. Still, the major industry is tourism, which gives the traveler a rather big chance to find here in Mysore the imaginary pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

You gotta go as the millions before you, curious of the spirit of this place, expecting enlightenment, anticipating Gods presence or just simply hoping for adventure or challenge yourself You gotta go believing, not believing, with high hopes or no expectations just one more step and you are there. No more sweat, no more surprises but this, as a path of your life is full of unexpected obstacles. When you are sure the steps are over, then they just start indeed. When you think you are done, you have to push yourself even harder, when you hope there are no more stairs; the new dare comes completely out of nowhere. one easily into a submissive status, while emphasizing holiness, rituality and importance of the place. Yet, it is definitely worth the strain.

Shravanabelagola means the monk on top of the hills, which is fully symptomatic, as hermits, mystics and ascetics have inhabited this place since the 3rd century BC. One can only imagine, how thickly wooded the hill had been at that time, before the construction of first temples began.

The tallest Gomateshwara in Karnataka and supposedly worlds largest monolithic stone statue lures both Jain pilgrims and curious tourists to Shravanabelagola (100km from Mysore). Two neat hills, Chandragiri and Vindyagiri, in the mainly lowland area dominate the panorama and nicely frame the view of the city; but only after overcoming 614 stairs aiming to the top of the Vindyagiri hill, which is also called the hill of Shravanabelagola. Climbing the hill can put

95

While temples on the opposite Chandragiri hill remind us of such distant history as the reign of the Maurya Empire in 3rd century BC, history of the Shravanabelagola hill revives the time of Western Ganga dynasty ruling between 4th and 6th centuries the ancient Karnataka from what is now known as Mysore district. The Western Ganga contribution to culture and religion of southern Karnataka region is essential. Much like present day Karnataka, the dynasty showed great tolerance to different religions. Basically, Western Ganga kings were followers and patrons of the Jainist religion that resulted in the construction of Gomateshwara monuments scat-

tered throughout the region. With its 57ft (17m) the Shravanabelagola Gomateshwara, dating back to 10th century AD, is a world rarity visible from as far as 20km distance. Necessarily, one has to come closer to see Bhagawan Bahubali emanate serenity, dignity and take pleasure in his slightly mysterious smile. Particularly, during the Maha Masthaka Abhisheka festival, which takes place once in every 12 to 14 years, at periods of astrological importance, pilgrims gather on this site to pour thousands of gallons of milk, honey and herbs over his head, thus charging themselves with spiritual energy. On the way to the giant Jain statue, one passes by the Odegal basti, the broken stones temple, whose granite pops supporting the temple pedestal arouse a rather bizarre impression. It is a type of triple-

shrine temple with three sanctums inside dating back to 14th century. Crossing huge flat granite blocks with glass-covered ancient inscriptions written in Old-Kannada and Pre-Old Kannada characters, one reaches a small, airy pavilion known as Tyagada Kamba. It is said, that the Ganga military commander Chavundraya, who commissioned the construction of Gomateshwara, distributed gifts to local people from this place. It is important to mention the remarkable artistic pillar in the middle of the pavilion.

Only a few steps away from the pavilion, is one of the countrys finest and largest reliefs decorating the Monolithic Gateway. The relief depicts Lakshmi sitting on a lotus with elephants flanking her on both sides, better known as Gajalakshmi.

Mysore Zoo
If you love to see variety of animals in a nice organized Zoo park and have a rest from a lot of temples, you can experience a nice afternoon in Mysore Zoo, which is one of the oldest and most popular Zoos in Southern India and the most visited attraction in the city after Maysore palace. At the same time it is an educative place as some of the animals and birds, which can be seen just in books, will be found right in front of your eyes! Its a house of some rare and exotic birds and animals, situated in amidst lush green surroundings. For this new and exciting experience you cant miss this place, too! - Erika, Slovakia and best animal gardens throughout India. With a panorama of the Chamundi hills in the background, it is a pleasure to stroll through the animal garden that was originally built on the premises of the royal summer palace. Even though the animal garden got a certain face-lift, the enclosures are authentic bearing signature of Maharajas architects. After gaining freedom, the zoo was presented by Maharaja to the Department of Parks and Gardens of the Mysore State Government.

Chamundi Hills
The Forty-Metergopura in the main entrance attracted both my eyes and my mind. The Indian way of building temples in the ancient centuries is the most artistic and creative style I have ever seen. The story behind the temple and the city is simply astonishing. The temple has a very attractive incarnation of Goddess Chamundi wearing an impressive garland of skulls, the thing that made me realize how powerful and respectful this heroic Goddess was. - Hadi, Morocco wari killed Mahishasura on these grounds, thus bringing peace to the land. The temple built in the name of the goddess houses a stone statue of Chamundeshwari that is ritually taken by the monks every Tuesday and Friday around the temple. Another victory factor in many of the Hindu epics is Nandi the bull. What now seats facing the shrine used to be Shivas vehicle and his gate keeper, among other duties, and played a major role in defeating the demon king of Lanka (Ravana). Being Lord Shivas first vehicle shows how intimate and close Nandi bull is associated to his Lord. He is the gate keeper of several Shivas temples and a chief in his army, gathering all this information together showed me the importance of this bull and the level of wisdom and experience that he reached. Its a black idol of a gigantic sitting bull likely the biggest one in India. I was literally impressed by the exquisite pendent bells wrapped around its neckline. I personally think that its just the legal guardian angel of Chamundi hills. - Hadi, Morocco

Chamundi Hills offer a panoramic view of Mysore`s lakes, parks and palaces. On top of the hill is the 12th century Chamundeshwari Temple, at an altitude of 3872ft above sea level. The original shrine was built by the Hoysala rulers, while the gopura tower was put up in the 17th century by the Vijayanagars. Later on, the temple has been reconstructed and further expanded by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, in1827, whose statue together with the statues of his three wives are deposited in front of the temples sanctum. Adjoining the temple is the gigantic statue of Mahishasura, the buffalo-headed demon. Legend has it, that Goddess Chamundesh-

We needed to climb 6oo steps to the temple piled up by yellow stones (or some carrier would help you to get to the top of the temple). More steps, more magnificent scenery flowing to our eyes. The temple complex consists of two parts. As we went through the gate of the temple, we could see that on our left side below the hill there are some stones and dots of red roofs; we could see all of the villages. Also, there is a flat stone platform with ancient words in it protected by huge glass. Next to the ancient treasure, there is a strange tower. Some people say it is moving, others say it is still. See it with your own eyes to know, who to believe. While keeping going on, we see some of the ancient orange drawings on the walls. Then, you will go to the top of the temple to see the huge statue of Bhagawan Bahubali making you feel respect and sincere mood. _____ Rita, Taiwan ___

The steep ascent to the Shravanabelagola Temple is really worth the climb. On the top, there is a huge statue of Bhagawan Bahubali. It is unbelievable that the 57ft (17.5m) high sculpture is built out of one piece of stone. Additionally, the view from the top of the hill is awesome. One can see wild jungle, splendid city and fabulous lakes.

you are visiting this country for the first time as it is so much different from our lives we live back home. Even the common things we do, eat, use, travel, etc are not really common here. If you want to experience this country with all its beauty and differences you must be really open minded and just simply said, dont think too much! First you will be shocked by the conditions that some people have to stay in, with the traffic, mess and trash in the streets, hygiene, running cows, dogs and goats in the roads and the smell. You can smell a lot here, but it never smells nice! Just to remind you, you are located in a developing country and once you accept this fact and get accustomed to these surroundings, you can start enjoying India as it has a lot to show. It is a main place of spirituality where miracles are happening, country with special habits, rules and costumes, countryside with picturesque view and great giant monuments with its special atmosphere. You can experience everything, from pretty poor conditions to luxury and wild nature! Its an adventure and strong experience you will never forget. Erika
