NAST names Chemistry faculty as Outstanding Young Scientist

For his research on molecular engineering of organic
electrical conductors and computer-based drug design of potential anti-cancer and anti-diabetes molecules, Chemistry Department Associate Professor Dr. Derrick Ethelbhert Yu was recently declared by the National Academy of Science and Technology as 2012 Outstanding Young Scientist in the field of chemistry. He presently heads a 12-member research team on designing and synthesizing organometallic molecules as potential components for magnetic molecular conductors; photo-magneto-sono-dynamic cancer therapy; and catalytic degradation of organic air pollutants. In 2011, Yu was recognized by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) for his paper on molecular conductors that was published in the New Talent Asia special issue of its Dalton Transactions journal. He obtained his BS and MS degrees in chemistry from DLSU. He is currently the vice president and treasurer of the De La Salle Alumni Association.

The NAST Outstanding Young Scientists Award is given every year to young Filipino scientists under the age of 41 who have made significant contributions to science and technology. Recipients are chosen based on the quality and number of their scientific works and publications and contributions to advances in science and to the well-being of the Philippine economy and culture.

Planning Office, Office of the President. During the event, DLSU President and Chancellor Br. Ricardo Laguda FSC underscored the Universitys transformative education as a tool to develop students critical thinking skills, effective communication, leadership, and collaboration. These tools, he said, are necessary to better understand the needs of the planet and to nurture a genuine concern for others. A parallel student conference was held simultaneously on campus. President-elect of APSSA and the National President of PAASA Dr. Ma. Paquita D. Bonnet led the organizing committee with DLSU Dean of Student Affairs Fritzie Ian Paz-De Vera and Assistant to the Rector for Student Affairs of the University of Santo Tomas Dr. Evelyn Songco. The 24 Gokongwei scholars presented during the recognition program are among those who received the highest marks during the DLSU college admission test in October 2011. They will receive full waiver of tuition fees and a monthly stipend to cover accommodation, meals, and other expenses.

Global citizenship was defined as an ethical disposition by which citizens are given an understanding of local and global contexts and are reminded of their responsibilities to act with awareness of the global community and recognize their roles as well as their rights. The conference focused on four main sub-themes: the evolving culture and philosophy of student affairs; student learning and leadership development in a globalized world; environmental realities and inter-generational responsibility; and intercultural competencies. The keynote speaker, former Senator Joey Lina, talked about Global Citizenship: Challenges, Opportunities and Responses.

Alumnus youngest to list at PSE DLSU welcomes pioneer batch of Gokongwei Scholars
Last June 27, De La Salle University formally welcomed the pioneer batch of the Gokongwei Grants
program of the Gokongwei College of Engineering (GCOE) and the Office of Admissions and Scholarships. Headed by JG Summit Chairman Emeritus John Gokongwei, representatives from the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, Inc. (GBF) joined DLSU in giving recognition to the new scholars and their high schools. With their shared mission of educating the best and the brightest students in the country, DLSU and GBF established the Gokongwei Grants to award new scholarships that will help in developing engineers and leaders who will contribute to our nations progress. Under the program, DLSU grants full scholarships to qualified students who wish to pursue any degree program offered by GCOE. Faithful to Lasallian values of faith, service, and communion, Calata supports numerous causes, including Gawad Kalinga, Child Protection Network, Cinemalaya, Spouses of Heads of Missions Charities, Red Cross, and Fashion Watch. 31-year-old Joseph Calata (MFI 01), chairman and chief executive officer of Calata Corporation, transformed a modest family business into the countrys largest distributor of agrochemical products and veterinary medicine. The company reported P2.7 billion in revenues last year. Net proceeds from Calata Corporations P270-million IPO are earmarked for the expansion of retail outlets nationwide. The company is set to open 100 stores all over Luzon.

A graduate of De La Salle University became the countrys

Childrens story wins award

Literature Department faculty member Genaro Gojo Cruz, who currently teaches Creative Writing, won in the 2nd Gig Book Storywriting Contest for his short story for children, Hello, Tatay! Waste reduction efforts with UC Berkeley

Support for PHL S&T agenda
Researchers, scientists, and academicians who
are members of the Philippine Society of JSPS RONPAKU Fellows (PRF) pushed for the national Science & Technology agenda during a meeting with Bangkok counterparts recently at De La Salle University.

DLSU students are collaborating with the University of California

Berkeley on efforts to reduce waste in campus. Facilitated by Campus Sustainability Office head Josemari Calleja, a Skype meeting was held between the two schools last summer to discuss waste reduction goals, initiatives, and achievements. Through this exercise, the two parties were able to plan collaborative waste reduction efforts and institutional energy conservation benchmarking goals. The activities will complement a number of waste reduction efforts already being implemented in campus. In 2009, the University Student Government (USG) started the Zero Styro campaign, which bans all styrofoam materials on campus. This was taken one step further through the Zero Plastic bags campaign introduced this year by the Campus Sustainability Office and USG.
