July 1997

A man should keep his friendship in constant repair - Samuel Johnson (1755).

BANDS OF THE MONTH FOR JULY ARE 40 AND 12 METRES

Friends June and I are now a little more organised and settled into our new QTH, but the list of chores seems to get longer and longer. I am still not back on the air (apart from the UK DX Packet Cluster), but intend putting the Butternut up in the next couple of weeks, provided the list of chores doesnt get much longer! June intends resuming to learn the Morse code and to improve on the 9wpm she reached before we left Alamosa. We are getting used to life in the country and loving it more and more every day. The rabbits continually entertain us with their antics on our back lawn and in the orchard, but disappear quickly when the foxes pass through, often in the middle of the day. June has taken a shine to one of the foxes and now puts out scraps for it on the patio every evening. A badger and squirrels, together with a large variety of birds, have also been visiting the garden. Some days, if we dont go out, we dont see anyone else all day! Yesterday evening I was working in the barn when June called to say that we had visitors in the back garden. Several of the small herd of heifers in the neighbouring field had found a gap in the fence and decided our grass looked greener. The next hour was spent playing Rawhide while I rounded them up and repaired the fence. Yes, life here is certainly a lot different than at Alamosa! With the change to my new Internet server, I had some problems sending and receiving E-mail, but this now appears to be working properly. If you sent me E-mail and did not receive a reply or an acknowledgement, then this was the reason. I always reply to every message received, even if it is just a Windle update. Whilst on the subject of E-mail, can I remind you of a previous plea. Please include your callsign in the body of your message if it isnt obvious from your E-mail address and secondly, please put FOC in the subject heading of your message (i.e. FOC: .................) if your message is to do with the club. I receive about 100 E-mail messages daily, the majority of them from the Reflectors I subscribe to for getting information for the RSGBs DX News Sheet. I check the headings quickly to decide which mes-

Finally, you will see from the FOC Calendar that several members are involved in DXpeditions. If you are operating away from home, then please let me know and I will include information about it in the News Sheet so members will know when and where to look for you. 54B4/G3LNS: Barbara and George moved into their new house at the beginning of April, but by the middle of June the build-

ers had still not moved out! George has been on the bands with a dipole at 20 feet and says he is amazed how well it has been getting out, probably helped by the 1500 feet ASL location. A later report from George says the concrete for the tower has been poured and the ground post installed. Work on assembling the TH11 starts next week. DJ9SB: Renata recently spent a week in Scotland on a trip organised by a bank in Mannheim. They visited a Rolls Royce Party in Dunblane, where nearly 100 old timers were on display with some of the drivers who were also old timers.

EA6ZY: Andy, K2LE, and Agnes visited Jan and Stan at the end of May for the CQ WPX CW Contest. Just after they returned home, Stan became ill and went into hospital in Ibiza. EA8CN: Andy recently had a visit from Tord, SM3EVR and four friends on their way to Friedrichshaven. Andy will be working on his summer house in Sweden during the first half of July. G2FDF: Murphy has struck Bill! After buying a second-hand IC765, it turned out to be faulty and Bill returned it to the dealer who kept it for two months and sent it back, still faulty! Bill cancelled the deal and bought a new FT1000MP which is now faulty! He also bought three new 6146s for stand-by for his FT102 and they were low emission! G2HKU: Ted has discovered his G5RV works on 6m. He has had several European QSOs and heard VE1PZ and a W2 station. G3IEW: Margaret and Stan will be visiting the USA during September and hopes to be able to operate with the following schedule: 4/8 September W2/G3IEW from K2QIL; 9/ 12 Sept W4/G3IEW from W4TAJ; 13/16 Sept N5FOC from KT5X; 17/23 Sept W/ G3IEW; 23/25 Sept W1/G3IEW. Stan mentions that his home station is actually located ten miles from where he lives. His landlord is suggesting that Stan may have to relocate his beam to another tower 100 yards away and asks if anyone can suggest how to ensure that an Emotator will operate with 150 yards of cable. G3IZD: Ivan will be QRV 24/28 July, including the IOTA Contest, as GM3IZD/P, from Islay Island (EU-008), CW/SSB all bands in the contest and WARC bands outside the contest. QSL to home call. G3LHJ: Derrick had a very windy NFD this year with Torbay ARC, but still broke 1000 QSOs for only the second time with

Jan, GIVZ, and Andy, G4VPM. G3SWH: Phil made 1164 CW QSOs (410 on 17m and 135 on 12m, none on 10m) during his holiday operation as SV8/G3SWH. G4BUO: Dave, G4BUO, and Andy, G4ZVJ, will be QRV 27/31 July from Malta as 9H3Z? (licence to be issued on arrival) and as 9HA in the IOTA Contest, with Steve, G4JVG, and 9H1EL. G4CEO: Maureen and Bob had a whale of a time at the Washington Dinner, so much so that Maureen is pestering me to find out about the Florida Dinner, says Bob. GW3SB: Alice and Chas have just returned from a trip along the Llangollen Canal in a narrow boat. He had lots of fun getting the radio working, including new Windles. K8OHG: Ken left Englewood in January for a heart valve replacement in Gainesville, FL, where his daughter lives, and is still there. He is gradually recovering and hopes to return to Englewood one day, but in the meantime is off the air. KT5X: Fred is expecting visitors G3IEW and W4TAJ to Santa Fe in September and will put them on the air as N5FOC. N2AA: Andy, K2LE, says Gene was in intensive care in hospital on 24 June, but was feeling better and hoping to go home. N4TO: Vic will be staying at Highcroft between 24 September and 7 October, and will be attending the RSGB HF Convention the weekend prior to Lords with us. He has just ordered a FT-920 for a back-up rig, but primarily for 6m. Summer antenna projects include additional antennas for 10, 15 and 20m to give stacked yagis on those bands. N6NT: Bruce was QRV 1 July as VY1RAC (the Yukon Territory HQ station) in the Canada Day Contest, and afterwards /M from Northwest Territories. NP3G: From 25 June Terry (ex W5XJ) dropped the /W5 to his call when operating

from KP4. He is in Puerto Rico until the middle of July ahead of him and Karen, NP3F (ex N4YGP) moving there permanently later in the year. OH2FOC: Seppo has changed his call, but (like Hans, OH2EA/OH2BDP last month), will keep OH2BDA for nostalgic reasons. Amateurs in Finland can now hold more than one call. OH2KI: Jorma was QRV 6/8 June as ZB2X. W1FJ: Ruth and Al had a good time at the Washington Dinner and Al has made his reservation for Lords. W4VQ: Bob asks for members help to obtain a QSL from 5A3TQ for a 10m QSO in the ARRL DX Contest in March 1959! He says the operator was R. Crowther, G3FJU, FOC member 600, who left the club in May 1968, (he was shown as deleted in a list of 49 members, presumably for not paying their subscriptions!). ZL2AGY: Tony, and other members of the Kiwi Contest Group, may be QRV as ZL6A during the IARU HF World Championship. ZL3GQ: Maire and Peter will be arriving in the UK on the Thursday prior to Lords and staying at Highcroft over the weekend. They then plan some touring, including perhaps a short trip to the Mediterranean sunshine, before returning home. ZS6AL: Vidi has been using a TS-50 as the TS930 developed power supply problems. He replaced both regulator transistors and the bridge rectifier and still cannot get the control voltage back on the regulators. It is back with the agent now waiting for a new PSU board from Japan. Vidi thinks the problem was caused by a local voltage surge which measured 250VAC instead of the usual 220VAC. This is the second time it has happened since 1986 when he bought the TS930 and wondered if any member can suggest how to overcome the problem?
