Willingly or not, they are being crowded into high density urban living and "walkable" communities in the name of sustainable development, Smart Growth and environmental justice.

    WhyhaveInotheardofthissideofsustainabledevelopmentbefore?

    HowdoestheUNversionofsustainabledevelopmententermycommunity?
    Plannersorgroupsapproachlocalofficialsand"stakeholders"(notalwaysresidents)withproposalstoreviewMasterPlans andconductsurveystoimprovelivingqualityandtheenvironment.Frequently,theyinvokeperceived"crises"suchas transportationissues,overpopulationorpoorwaterquality.Grantmoneyoftenfollows,andmayincludestringsthatlimit propertyrights.TheUNversion,whileprotectingtheearthandwildlife,hassecondaryregardforpersonalrights.

    Howmightsustainabledevelopmentaffectmypropertyrights?
    Byacceptingcertaingrantsandextremeregulationsonpropertyusage,ownersfindtheirdevelopmentrightsstrippedaway infavorofbicyclepaths,solarfarms,openspaces,mixedusedwellingsandcontrolledpropertyandfarminguse.
