A long-serving and honorable member
of the K-9 Unit died two weeks ago after
serving the Evesham Township Police De-
partment for more than eight years.
The Evesham Police Department an-
nounced the passing of K-9 Dyos. Dyos was
almost 12 years old when he was put to
rest. He served as a member on the Eve-
sham Police Departments Canine unit for
eight-and-a-half years, retiring from duty
in November of 2011.
During his years of service to the de-
partment, Dyos assisted patrol officers on
hundreds of calls for service, building
searches, missing person searches, sus-

The Evesham Township Coun-
cil approved a contract that could
save Evesham money, but comes
at the price of nine full-time em-
ployees in the parks department.
The members of council unan-
imously approved a contract to
privatize the lawn mowing servic-
es in the township for $271,750 a
year to All Green Turf Manage-
ment Corporation out of Black-
wood. The turf company current-
ly mows in Gloucester Township,
the Cherry Hill School District
and the Gloucester Township
School District.
Five out of the nine parks em-
ployees were at the meeting and
walked out after the final decision
was made.
The private contractor will
likely mow the grass in the town-
ship 13 times a year, Township
Manager Bill Cromie said.
To approve the contract, the
township will have to terminate
the jobs of nine full-time employ-
ees from the parks department.
From 2012 to 2014, Cromie report-
ed that the township would have
to pay out more than $322,000 in
accumulated leave payouts and
unemployment benefits.
The unemployment benefits
total about $278,820, Cromie said,
but only if the nine employees
stay on full unemployment for
three years.
After 2015, Cromie said the
township could realize a yearly
savings of $476,650.
The township can realize al-
most a two-cent tax rate savings
over the span of three years,
Mayor Randy Brown said, which
is a huge number.
I have stated before that I will
not raise property taxes, Brown
said. Our goal should not be to
maintain the status quo, but to
lower property taxes for our resi-
dents in the township.
However, what cant be meas-
ured is the work the parks em-
ployees perform outside of their
mowing duties, Cromie said.

sponsible for the arrests of count-
less people and the confiscation of
large quantities of narcotics, po-
lice department representatives
reported.
A K-9 unit is a specially trained
dog to assist police and other law-
enforcement personnel in their
work. The units are typically
used for search and rescue opera-
tions, cadaver searches, or detec-
tions services such as drugs or ex-
plosives.
Dyos was also instrumental in
the seizure of numerous motor
vehicles, a large amount of prop-
erty and currency. He also partici-
pated in numerous community
relations functions, such as
demonstrations for youth groups
and school assemblies.
When the term police canine
is mentioned, many people think
of the invaluable crime-fighting
and public relations service a ca-
nine provides to the law enforce-
ment organization and the citi-
zens they serve, but forget the hu-
manistic significance of the po-
lice canine. K-9 Dyos was a valued
member of the Evesham Police
Departments family, a state-
ment from the police department
said. He was also the protector,
partner, friend and family mem-
ber of Officer Mark Scambia. His
enthusiasm and sense of duty to
the people of Evesham Township
will be missed. Dyos, we salute
you and thank you for your dedi-
cated service. You will be greatly
missed by handler Officer Mark
Scambia, his family, and the men
and women of the Evesham Po-
lice Department. May you rest in
peace.

Township fires suspicious
Students receive award
An award was presented to the
students of the Evesham Town-
ship School District for their sup-
port in raising money to fund the
police officers from town who
ride in the Police Unity Tour, a
300-mile cycling trip from New
York to Washington, D.C.
The district has contributed
more than $3,000 to the cause over
the past few years.
The tour just completed a 16th
year of riding, and there are
more than 1,600 riders from all
over the country and with repre-
sentatives from Australia, The
United Kingdom, Canada and
many more countries.
The Unity Tour is held during
Police Week each year in May,
and the tour ends with a candle-
light vigil at the Police Memorial
in Judiciary Square in Washing-
ton, D.C. There are more than
19,000 names of law enforcement
officers who gave the ultimate
sacrifice in the line of duty on the
wall.
The Evesham Police Depart-
ment is asking for the public's
help in investigating three suspi-
cious fires that have occurred
during the past year in the unit
block of Wessex Place. The latest
fire happened during the evening
hours of July 4. No one was home
at the time of the fire, which left a
shed completely destroyed.
The three suspicious fires have
all occurred at the same resi-
dence on Wessex Place. Two of
the fires torched the victims shed
and a third torched the victims
truck that was parked in front of
the residence.
Evesham Police have increased
their patrols and are asking
neighbors to be extra vigilant, es-
pecially in the evening hours
when the fires are happening.
The fires are under investiga-
tion by the Evesham Police De-
partment and fire marshal's of-
fice. Anyone with information is

Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat, the first
full-length musical by the leg-
endary team Andrew Lloyd Web-
ber and Tim Rice, lights up the
Dennis Flyer Theatre stage this
July.
Presented by Mainstage Center
for the Arts, this popular retelling
of the Biblical story of Joseph
and his coat of many colors is
jam-packed with an energetic mix
of music and dancing.
Josh Toro, of Moorestown,
plays the lead role of Joseph, a
boy who can interpret dreams
and receives the coat as a gift
from his father, Jacob (Joshua
Brooks of Williamstown). His
jealous brothers sell him into
slavery in Egypt, where he is pur-
chased by Potiphar (Charles
Ward of Deptford).
Potiphars wife (Grace Szczep-
kowski of Marlton) has him
thrown into jail after he rejects
her. While imprisoned, news of
Josephs prophetic abilities
reaches the Pharaoh, comically
portrayed as Elvis by JD Shaw of
Stratford.
Joseph soon becomes second in
command. Having suffered years
of hardship, Josephs brothers
eventually find themselves beg-
ging for mercy from the brother
they once betrayed.
The colorful story is told al-
most completely through song
and dance, featuring a wide vari-
ety of memorable musical num-
bers including Any Dream Will
Do, Benjamin Calypso, Jacob
and Sons/Josephs Coat, Song
of the King and Go, Go, Go
Joseph.
Its not only the adults who will
appreciate Joseph. The shows up-
beat nature and moral lessons
also make it a great theatrical ex-
perience for younger audiences.
And, the Mainstage production,
like the Broadway productions of
Joseph, features a childrens cho-
rus.
Though Toros performed with
other local theatres, Joseph
marks his first Mainstage appear-
ance.
In addition to Fiscella, Josephs
creative team includes choreogra-
pher, Renee Chambers Liciaga of
Mount Laurel; vocal director,
Evan Figueras of Washington
Township; set designer Tom
Weaver of Cherry Hill; and cos-
tume designers, Linda Nese of

ouve no doubt passed someone
texting while driving. The per-
sons focus isnt on the road. In-
stead, its on spelling a word correctly
or getting that last comment in.
But a bill in the state Senate it
passed recently by a 38-0 margin
would hike fines for texting-while-driv-
ing considerably. And repeat offenders
would face stiff fines and a possible
drivers license suspension.
If the bill passes in the Assembly,
and Gov. Christie signs the bill into
law, a first-time offender would face a
fine of $200, up from the current $100
fine.
A second offense would run a mo-
torist a $400 fine, and a third offense,
$600.
A three-time offender would be
slapped with three drivers-license
points.
And a fourth-time offender would be
subject to a license suspension of 90
days.
We applaud this bill and want to see
the Assembly pass it and the governor
sign it into law.
Though New Jersey already has
tough texting-while-driving laws on
the books, a short ride on any of the
states major roads would reveal the
penalties are not yet tough enough.
Far too often, people recklessly pay
more attention to their texting than
they do the road.
And quite frankly, the larger fines
and the prospect of losing a drivers li-
cense for up to three months for repeat
offenders is the right penalty for this
kind of behavior.
Its bad enough in 2012 when people
drive while speaking on the phone
(without the use of a headset or blue-
tooth device).
But texting is clearly worse. And
more distracting. And its time people
who gamble with the lives of others
while driving and texting pay a hefty
price for doing so.
This bill must pass in the Assembly,
and the governor must sign it into law.

the ball fields in the township.
Cromie said most of these du-
ties can be performed by mem-
bers of the public works depart-
ment or by bringing on seasonal
help in the summer and fall for
leaf collection but there isnt a
solid price for how much this
would cost.
Terry Nelson, 64, an employee
of the department for 17 years
said he had only 10 months to go
until he turned 65 and was able to
access his pension. He said that
the departments union shop
steward received a phone call on
the morning of the meeting from
the township to let them know
that the contract was being con-
sidered on the nights agenda.
Nelson said the council was se-
verely underestimating the extra
work the members of the parks
department complete in the town-
ship. Sure the public works de-
partment can pick up the slack,
he said, but theyll be doing it
with an employee making $28 an
hour and making time-and-a-half
if they go overtime.
At the end of the contract they
will find out they made a mistake
and go back to their own work-
ers, Nelson said. But theyll
start at $12-an-hour, so theyll
make out in the end.
The contract will likely begin
within the month.

The Evesham Police Depart-
ment is looking for information
from the public on an attempted
luring of a 15-year-old girl that oc-
curred on Monday, July 9, at 12:15
p.m.
Police say the victim told them
she was dropped off by a school
bus at the intersection of Kings
Grant Drive and Coventry Circle
and as she began to walk home,
she was approached by a white
cargo van occupied by a man.
Police say the suspect, who
drove the van, pulled along side

Police say the victim was terri-
fied by the man, and immediately
ran home.
The suspect is described as ap-
proximately 50 years old, with
salt and pepper-colored hair,
short trimmed beard that is dark-
er then the hair on his head, and
was wearing a white T-shirt.
The vehicle is described as a
white cargo van with only a front
driver and passenger side win-
dow. The vehicle was last seen
driving west on Coventry Circle.

Many Woodstream pool
records were shattered this week.
The female 8 and under 100 med-
ley relay crushed the Wood-
stream pool record. The relay
consisted of Abigail Kulinski
(back), Megan Zeiler (breast),
Alexa Antonelli (fly), and was an-
chored by Sarah Crysler (free).
They went an impressive first
place winning time of 1:29.56.
The female 13-14 200 medley-
relay broke the Woodstream pool
record for the second week in a
row, lowering its own record time
by 2 seconds. The relay consisted
of Nikki Broome (back), Breanna
Gleason (breast), Morgan Sage
(fly) and Jamie Bowne (free).
They touched first with a win-
ning time of 2:14.65.
After their win in the 200 med-
ley relay, the same group of four
girls got together again and won
the female 13-14 200 free relay and
broke the Woodstream pool
record for the second week in a
row lowering their record time to
2:00.48. Relay consisted of Nikki
Broome, Jamie Bowne, Breanna
Gleason and Morgan Sage.
Morgan Sage broke the Wood-
stream pool record in the girls 13-
14 50 fly, with an impressive 30.44
and coming in first place.
