Charity Search
In order to allow your site users to find a charity to make a donation, you need a database of charity EINs (Employer Identification Numbers assigned by the IRS). Network for Good does all disbursements based on EIN, but we do not provide a database. There are several ways to access or create a charity database. 1. GuideStar: GuideStar is the biggest database of US 501c3 charities that also includes vetting against the patriot Act watch lists, financial filings with the IRS and other metrics. We have a partnership with GuideStar, so if you choose to access their standard web service database, you would have to pay a separate annual license fee (usually about $10,000), but no additional set-up fee. This database is already integrated with our Credit Card processing API, but you do need a license with them to access it. This option encompasses the whole universe of US 501c3 charities (about 1.2 million) in the GuideStar database that is regularly updated based on IRS listings and Patriot Act watch lists. If you dont need the whole 1.2 million charities, you can also purchase subsets of the database For example only charities in the state of California or all environmental organizations. This option usually has a flat up-front fee for an initial data dump and then a per charity nominal fee to add to the database over time. This type of database is not accessible through the Network for Good API. Contact: Asif Talukdar, Director, Business Development, (718) 836-8510 Direct, atalukdar@GuideStar.org 2. Charity Navigator: Charity Navigator is a charity rating agency that assigns a star rating (1-4 stars) to a subset of US charities. They have created their own set of criteria by which to rate organizations. Currently, there are about 5,000 US nonprofits listed. IRS: You can also access the IRS database, but this doesnt have the extra layer of confidence with respect to Patriot Act watch lists etc because this is just a listing of 501c3 public charities that are registered with the IRS. Further, the IRS database is not available in a web service format so your developers would have to do additional coding to integrate the search into your website.
