Discussion: (i) Hardness is the resistance of a material when various kinds of forces like abrasion or surface indentation, cutting action, or permanent distortion is applied. The Rockwell Hardness Tester is used in rapid hardness testing because the whole process of testing the material takes up very little time as it can be done quickly. The test piece does not require any preparation and the hardness number can be read off directly from the machine dial. Hence, there will be no need for any calculations to be made to find out the hardness number of the material.
