WHAT IS WEIGHTED MEAN?

Weighted mean is solved using the following formula: (XW) Wtd X = W

Where: is the weighted mean. is the individual score or value is the weight is the sum of the products of X and W. is the sum of the weights

Wtd X X W (XW) W

LETS HAVE AN EXAMPLE:

X
45 26 15 21

W
3 6 2 5

Solution: Wtd X =

(45x3) + (26x6) + (15x2) + (21x5) 3+6+2+5

Wtd X = 26.63

ANOTHER EXAMPLE:
A

student obtained 40, 50, 60, 80, and 45 marks in the subjects of Math, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology respectively. Assuming weights 5, 2, 4, 3, and 1 respectively for the above mentioned subjects. Find Weighted Arithmetic Mean per subject.

SOLUTION:
Marks Subjects Math Statistics Physics Chemistry Obtained x 40 50 60 80 Weight

W 5
2 4 3

XW 200 100 240 240

Biology Total

45

45

W = 15 (XW) = 825

Solution:
Wtd X = (40x5) + (50x2) + (60x4) + (80x3) + (45x1) 5+2+4+3+1

Wtd X = 55 marks/subject
