(b) A short post constructed from a hollow circular tube of aluminum supports a compressive load of 54 kN. (b) The mechanical assembly shown in the figure 1. consists of a copper tube, a rigid and plate and two steel cable with turnbuckles. The slack is removed from the cables by rotating the turnbuckles until the assembly is sung, but no initial stresses. (Further tightening of the turnbuckles will produce a prestressed condition in which the cables are in tension and tube in compression. Determine : a) Forces in tube and cables when turnbuckles are tightened by N turns. b) Shortening of tube.

(b) A two stage single acting reciprocating compressor takes in air at the rate of 0.2 m3/s. The intake pressure and temperature of air are 0.1 mPa and 160C. The air is compressed to a final pressure of 0.7 mPa. The intermediate pressure is ideal and intercooling is perfect and the compression index in both the stages is 1.25 and the compressor runs at 600 rpm.
