Al Ruskin
Q 1. Attempt a causal analysis of Al ruskins behaviour by making use of an appropriate framework from behavioural sciences.

Ans. We will discuss his behaviour first with the help of the following OB concepts:Big 5 personality traits 1. Agreeableness- Refers to the persons ablity to get along with others. It can be Low,Medium and High. Here Al Ruskin showed signs of Medium agreeableness. For e.g 1. When he was working as a field analyst in the district office he helped the local sales force there. He really enjoyed the work there and work was appreciated by all. His manager there was so impressed by him that he asked him if he would like to work for him on a permanent basis.(positive example) 2. He and his boss didnt get along very well. When he asked him to arrange a meeting for him with the clerical department people working on his project, his boss turned down the idea saying - he was making too much fuss about it and the boss didnt see any reason why we needed to get together to get the job done.(negative example) 2. Conscientiousness Refers to the number of goals on which a person focuses on. We feel that his conscientiousness was low: For eg 1. He was always talking about how he disliked his job and how his being from Harvard would allow him to find good jobs in other companies, but he never took the initiative to find another job. Even though he talked a lot he never acted on it. 3. Negative emotionality Characterized by moodiness and insecurity We feel that he has medium negative emotionality. He hasnt shown any signs of insecurity nor is he a very reactive but he is little bit stresses with his job. 4.Extraversion- Refers to a persons comfort level with relationships. We feel he has a balanced personality He is neither very extrovert nor very introvert. He is not very assertive but also not very laidback. 5. Openness The capacity to entertain new ideas and to change as a result of new information His openness is low. He is not able to adapt to the new systems and processes and work culture of the organization

Locus of Control It is the extent to which people believe their behaviour has a real affect on what happens to them. He has external locus of control because he gets frustrated and dissatisfied and blames others for everything which is wrong. He does not own up to his mistakes and shortcomings. Self Efficacy Persons belief about his/her capabilities to perform a task. We think he has high self efficacy because he thinks that he can get a good job anywhere. He also thinks that his way of dealing with situations is the right way. 6. Cognitive Dissonance- Anxiety a person experiences when he simultaneously possesses two sets of knowledge or perceptions contradictory to each other . We believe he has cognitive dissonance because he talked about changing the job but he never took the initiative to find another job. Even though he talked a lot he never acted on it. 7. Job Satisfaction- It is the extent to which a person is gratified or fulfilled by his/her work. We believe he has low Job Satisfaction . He said Every job is a crisis and you always have to do a kind of halfway job.

Q. 2 Suggest remedial measures and provide rationale for the same. Ans. 1. It seems that he finds it hard to get a job done in his organization and get help from his coworkers. It would be better for him if he starts being more tactful and handles different situations in a way by which he can get what he wants. 2. He seems to talk a lot but doesnt act on it. It would be better if he talks less and act more so that he can achieve his desired results. 3. He blames all of his problems on others. He needs to start owing up and take responsibility for his actions. He should concentrate on his drawbacks and try to improve himself rather than finding faults with others.

4. He seems totally dissatisfied with his job. As we see it he has two

options. One is to quit his job and find a better job in which he would be happy. The other option is to change his attitude and enjoy his job. He needs to adjust and adapt to different situations and find happiness in the work he is doing instead of finding faults.
