The Daily Monitoring Report


The Field Situation
- Demonstrations erupted nationwide in protest at the massacre carried out by the Syrian security forces and Shabiha (militia affiliated to Syrian regime) in Houla town, mostly in many regions in Damascus and its countryside, Homs, Hama, Idleb, Aleppo, Al-Haska, Deir ez-Zor and Daraa.(2)(3)(4)(5) Qusayr, Houla, in addition to the two villages of Jusieh and Al-Nizariah and Hamidiya Street, Homs governorate in terms of the continuity of cutting off electricity and water in some districts.(2) - Security forces opened fire on the observers to prevent them from arriving at the town of Kafr Aya, Homs.(2) - Five elements affiliated to Al-Assad's battalions were killed in traps laid in different regions of Daraa.(4) - Al-Assad' security forces and Shabiha (militia affiliated to Syrian regime) attacked the funeral of the activist Rabie Al-Ghazy, and also detained tens of the participants. In addition, a number of critics and men of letters who participated in that funeral were beaten and arrested.(1)(2) - Eight soldiers in Aleppo in addition to eight others in Hama were martyred when they tried to dissent from Al-Assad's battalions.(2) - Al-Assad's detachments bombed the Kurdish mountain region in Latakia Governorate using helicopters for the second day in a row in an attempt to - Hadi Al-Abdullah, the opposition Syrian activist, announced counting up 106 martyrs in Houla town, most of them were slain, including tens of infants. He also pointed out that the international monitors' mission arrived at Houla town and documented and photographed- in a mosque- the corpses of 94 ones out of the massacre's victims.

The Internal Situation


- Local sources in Houla, Homs said that AlShaalan's family was totally killed. Furthermore, activists in Houla town described the behavior of Shabiha (militia affiliated to Syrian regime) in that town as being the same of the Zionist gangs, adding that Houla massacre is similar to Deir Yassin massacre carried out by the Zionist gangs in Palestine in 1948.(1) - General Robert Mood, chairman of the UN monitoring mission in Syria, condemned "the brutal tragedy" in Houla town, warning those who use violence that "they will lead the country to a civil war." He also asserted that the observers who arrived at Houla on Saturday morning could count up more than 32 children under ten, in addition to about other 60 corpses of women and men.(1)(4)(5)(6)(7) - The Syrian television aired footage of Houla massacre previously broadcast by the opposition activists on the internet, describing the corpses as being victims of a massacre carried out by "terrorist" gangs, without giving any details.(3)

Political Mobility
- The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) group in Syria said that it would reconsider all its stances following Houla massacre, holding the international community and the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon responsible for that "brutal massacre". In its statement, the MB group in Syria considered that Anan and the international monitors as participants in covering up the regime's crimes, as they used to be silent about violations and massacres committed by the regime, in addition to deceiving the international community.(1)(2) - The Syrian National Council (SNC) called on the UN Security Council to hold an immediate meeting following the brutal massacre of Houla and take required resolutions for protecting the Syrian people under the chapter no.7 (of the UN Charter) that ensures protecting the Syrian citizens from the regime's crimes by force.

Arab Political Stances


- UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan called for an urgent meeting of the Arab League to discuss Al-Houla massacre, saying that the targeting of the civilians signifies the tragic failure of Arab and international efforts to put an end to the violence against the civilians in Syria.(2)(4) - Nabil El-Arabi, secretary-general of the Arab League, described the killing in Houla as a horrific crime, urging the UN Security Council to stop the escalation of killing and violence by "armed gangs" and government military forces.

- Egypt's Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr said that what happened is a "crime that cannot be tolerated ", calling for bring to account those who are responsible for it.(2) - Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, head of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS), condemned AlHula massacre, calling on the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Conference, the United Nations and the Security Council to love up to their duties to protect the Syrians, and take revenge on perpetrators of the massacres.(2) - During a massive sit-in staged in front of the Syrian Embassy in Kuwait, some members of the Kuwaiti National Assembly called on sons of their tribes and other Kuwaiti citizens to donate money to the Free Syrian Army to buy weapons, urging leaders of Arab and Islamic countries, especially the King of Saudi Arabia, Emir of Qatar and The Turkish prime minister, to intervene to put an end to oppression faced by the Syrian people. The MPs called on the Emir of Kuwait to donate, make a move for the Syrian people, and open the door to Jihad.

- General Mustafa Ahmed Al-Shaikh, head of the military council of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), called on his fighters and the rebels to launch systematic and well-considered military strikes against AlAssad's battalions, Shabiha and the regime's key figures without exception. He also called on the friends of Syria to create a military alliance, outside of the UN Security Council to carry out targeted air strikes against Al-Assad's battalions and the symbols of his regime.

- The Revolutionary Council affiliated to the Syrian Revolution General Commission said that the Syrians are no longer interested in Kofi Annan's initiative, asserting the failure of that initiative, as it led to opposite effects. It also called on the Syrian rebels to reject any kind of cooperation with the international monitors in addition to urging them to leave Syria.

- France's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius condemned the "massacres" committed in Houla, and "atrocities" faced by the Syrian people. Fabius said he was making immediate arrangements for a Paris meeting of the Friends of Syria group, adding that the international community should mobilize stop the killing of the Syrian people.(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(7)

- The Syrian opposition key figure Haitham Al-Maleh believes that all the international initiatives, including Annan's initiative, failed due to the practices of AlAssad's regime, calling for arming the Free Syrian Army (FSA).(2)
