Intro

ATP is made in the breakdown of glucose


The first stage is Glycolysis The type of reaction that occurs depends on whether there is oxygen available

Glycolysis

Occurs in Cytosol Anaerobic

Glucose molecule is split into 2 pyruvate molecules


Produces 2 ATP
2 ATP Glucose Molecule
2 Pyruvate

If oxygen is available the cell performs aerobic respiration

Aerobic respiration produces 36-38 ATP molecules

Glucose + Oxygen > CO + Water + ATP

Aerobic Respiration occurs in the mitochondria They are large organelles composed of folded membranes The number of mitochondria a cell has depends on how much energy they need
