Plane stress (Strength of Materials - I, Final Exam-41-3) Problem :

1. Superposition of two dierent plane stress states Determine a) the principal planes and the principal stresses and b) the maximum shearing stresses, and c) draw the Mohrs circle for the state of plane stress resulting from the superposition of the two states of plane stress shown.

Solution :
The Case I can be transformed to the stress state in the coordinate axes of the Case II for = 30 as follows: xx xx xx xx + yy xx yy 0 + cos 2 + xy sin 2 2 2 = 0 + 0 + 50 sin 60 = 43.3 MPa = xx + yy xx yy 0 = cos 2 xy sin 2 2 2 = 0 0 50 sin 60 = 43.3 MPa xy xy xy yy xx 0 sin 2 + xy cos 2 2 = 0 + 50 cos 60 = 25 MPa =

yy yy yy

The superposition of the transformed Case - I and Case - II yields xx yy xy The average stress is xx + yy 118.3 + 56.7 ave = = = 87.5 MPa 2 2 The dierence of the normal stresses is xx yy 118.3 56.7 = = 30.8 MPa dif = 2 2 The radius of the Mohrs circle is q p R = 2 + 2 = 30.82 + 752 = 81.08 MPa xy dif Dr. M. Kemal Apalak = 43.3 + 75 = 118.3 MPa = 43.3 + 100 = 56.7 MPa = 25 + 50 = 75 MPa

2. Equivalent stress system The principal stresses are a,b a b The principal directions are tan 2a b xy 75 = , a = 33.84 dif 30.8 = 33.84 + 90 = 123.84 = = ave R = 87.5 81.08 = 168.58 MPa = 6.42 MPa

The maximum in-plane shearing stress is ( max )in-plane = R = 81.08 MPa and the normal stress in these planes is n = ave = 87.5 MPa The corresponding directions are d e = a + 45 = 33.84 + 45, = 78.84 + 90 = 168.84 d = 78.84
