'.J,.
.. Rev. James Woodside was born and educated in England, and took
-._--" orders in the Church of England. Previous
to 1718 he was preaching in a Presbyterian Church in Garvago
in the Bann Valley, Ireland, to the Scotch-Irish. In the
summer of 1718, Rev. James Woodside and his sons William and
James, with 40 families of about 160 sailed from Derry Lough,
Ireland. They landed in Falmouth then settled in Brunswick~
He and his son William built a large blockhouse at Maquoit.
In 1718, the proprietors of B~nswick, who were Puritans
and the Scotch Presbyterian settlers, invited him to preach
for six months on probation. He preached here at the Fort
at the Falls. He was not puritanical enough to suit the
settlers, so in 1720 he returned to England and his son
James soon followed, but his son William remained and be-
came a prominent man in the Settlement.
In 1726, Rev. James Woodside sent an oil Portrait of
himself, painted by Gibson, to his son. A descendent has
Willed the painting to the First Parish Congregational
Church in Brunswick.
2nd Generation
~. Capt. William Woodside of the second generation, son of
Rev. James Woodside, was born in
1703 and came to this country in 1718. He died in Bruns-
wick Jan. 31, 1778, aged 75 years.
He obtained command of the Blockhouse at Maquoit in
1726. In 1727 he was commissioned Captain of a Company
of Soldiers from Brunswick, Me., during the Indian Wars
of 1727 and was afterwards appointed Chaplain of the Army
at the Siege of Louisburg in 1750. He received his comm-
iSSion as Chaplain from Lord ~don. He was a well known
Indian trader, was also justice of the peace and acted as
trial justice.
Capt. Woodside's service in his Company in 1727 was
52 weeks and 3 days, his payment being four pounds per
month. He served in Capt. David Dunning's Alarm List in
1757, and with him his sons Vincent and William Jr.
Capt. William Woodside married at Brunswick, Anne
Vincent, who died Dec. 1, 1745, aged 40 years. She was
the daughter of Capt. William Vincent, one of the pioneer
settlers of BrunSWick, and his wife Anna , who
died Oct. 5, 1798, aged 63 years. Capt. William Vincent
was located at the west end of Brunswick in 1752.
On April 30th, 1747, the marriage intentions of Capt.
W1lliam Woods1de and Jean Christy of Boston, Mass. were
pub~ah.d, but no record of this marriage has ever been
;"",' tovac1. In 174' he recei ~ed a deed from the First Church
