Recommendations to students interested in this site in the future:

As I reflect over my internship experience at the HOPE Commission, I realize that it would be unfair to base my opinion solely on my struggles with my lack of supervision. In all fairness, I think that the HOPE Commissions decision to implement a new program of the magnitude as the reentry center made the relationship estranged due to the time and commitment that was necessary in getting the program off the ground and all of the players on the playing field. My honest opinion is the timing was off. The lack of supervision was not deliberate; it was unavoidable with all of the necessary meetings, not to mention, Charles and his wife expecting their first child. Once the reentry center is up and running and the staff has moved to their new location, I think most of the issues that I encountered would be moot, such as equipment & system access, as well as access to the site. I think having Charles attend my presentation was therapeutic for the both of us. I know that I was frightened of what he was going to think about my feelings, but in all actuality, he was very receptive and understanding. I also feel that anyone wanting to intern at the Commission would benefit most if they were either unemployed or had a lax or flexible work schedule. Therefore they would get the full effects of the agency and the programs that they partner with in the community. There are a many of meetings to attend and functions to partake in, however, if your schedule is rigid, the way mine was, you will miss out on the most important parts of running an agency and that is the many backdoor meetings and teleconferences. I truly believe that if my schedule was just a bit more accommodating that my experience would have been extremely different as well. I think Charles builds people up and get them prepared for bigger and better things, if they are up to the challenge. I think that is why I am truly sorry that I didnt apply myself more and show more enthusiasm about my internship. Because of my delay in reaching out, I lost out on some valuable time that could have brought me closer to my Executive Director and my co-workers. However, I can truly say that now that it is over, Charles and I, along with Rysheema and Shefon have truly bonded and I know that our relationship will last a lifetime.
