decide to keep a diary? Why does she call it Kitty? Anne keeps a diary because she admits that she doesnt have many real friends, and she is using this diary to tell her feelings. How did the German occupations of Holland affect Anne and her family? It affected her family because they had to go into hiding. What did Anne mean when she wrote on July 8th, years seem have passed between Sunday and now. So much has happened; it is just as if the whole world turned up side down? She is trying to tell us that in a couple of daysshe now has to say good bye to her old life and start a new life in a new home in hiding. Who helps the Frank family go into hiding? Why do you think they wanted to help them? Miep and Koophieus helped the Frank family escape into hiding because they were friends and didnt want them hurt. What attempts did Anne and her family make to keep her life as normal as possible? The Frank family keep it as normal as possible by having rooms in there hiding place, learning language and math, having dinner together, celebrating birthdays, and putting things on the wall because they didnt know how long they would be there (They were in hiding for 2 and half years). What news from the outside world made Anne realize the desperate conditions the Jews faced? Anne desperation came from the killing of Jews as well as the bombings. Why wouldnt Anne allow news of the outside world depress her? Anne always reminder herself that she was one of the lucky ones to be alive, she was safe were she was. What was the general living condition sin Holland during the war? The general living conditions in Holland during the war were that children didnt have good clothes or much food to eat.

How did Anne justify her feeling with her mother? Do you think her feelings were justified? Anne feels that her mother isnt doing a good job being a mother. When she talks to her dad he understands her better. Why did Anne parents consider sending her outdoors with Miep? Why did they decide against the plan? She needed to go to the eye doctor, but she didnt go because it was dangerous. What problems arose between Dussel and Anne because they shared a room? Do you think a conflict between the two was inevitable? One of there main problems was that Anne wanted more tine at the desk in there room and Dussel denied. It is inevitable that they will disagree because theres a huge difference of who they are as people and the difference of age. Why were the air raids in Holland both welcoming and frightening for Annex residents? The air raids were frightening because they were on the top floor and closer to dying, they were welcoming because they know that with every air raids it was a sign that the British was still fighting for them. What was extraordinary about what Anne described an ordinary day in the Annex? She said an ordinary day at the Annex is silent during the days and more lively at night. Why did the residents of the Annex become more active at 5:30 in the evening? They were more active at 5:30 because people left the office. What evidence shows that Anne was suffering from depression? The way she wrote in her diary was important evidence but another big reason was Because she was taking depression pills called Valerian Pills. Why did Elli now have more of the responsibility for helping the people in the Annex survive? Elli had more responsibility because she was one of the oldest and because the others were sick and couldnt help. When a thought about her friends Lies, what did she imagine? She imagines that she is begging for food and asking for help, with old clothes and big eyes, this is because she is in the concentration camps. She knows that this is what there doing to people she knows and cares about. What did Anne believe the only cure for loneliness was? She thought the only cure or loneliness was to go to Peter.

Why did Anne originally seek out Peter Van Dann? Why do you think their relationship grew? She seeks him out because he one of the only boys in the Annex but also to cure her loneliness. How did the people in the Annex get news from the outside world? What topics interest them the most? People in the Annex would get news from the radio and other person who got them into hiding, topics they likes was the war and especially the underground movement. What preparation for the English invasion did the people in the Secret Annex make? Some preparation that the residents of the secret Annex made sure was that they always had food and firewood because other people might want to stay with them. How did Anne feel she had changed while living in the Annex? She became a mature young woman. How did Anne and her mother each think she can relieve depression? Why do you think he had different solutions to the problem of depression? Her moms depression was to think of all the harm in the world and be happy for her safety and her health. And Anne idea is to enjoy the beauty of nature and think about the joyful parts about life. I think there solutions are different because Annes mom is more mature. Why was Kitty becoming an even more companion to Anne? She can trust her with her inner most thoughts. How did Anne help Peter cope with life in the Annex? By talking to Peter about things that are going on, as well as just being happy, to cheer him up. How did the war affect life to an ordinary citizen life? The war affect life, by taking away there homes, shortage of everything, under feeding. It was the survival of the fittest What were Annes dreams for the future? Based on what you know about Anne from her diary, do you think she might have realized her dreams? Here dreams was to get out of the Annex and have a normal life, her dreams was to be a writer. Why was April 15, 1944 an important day for Anne? It was important because Peter kissed her. Why did Anne feel guilty to the letters she wrote to her father? Because her father felt really hurt.

What event was everyone in the Annex, anxiously waiting for? They were waiting for the British invasion, so they could be freed. Why did the people in the Annex have to eat less? Because they had to save food, for if they had someone else to go into hiding. Why was Anne disappointed in Peter? Because he was weak minded and lacked character, and wasnt vocal like Anne. Facets of Adolescence Abandonment leaving her home, going to a place that she didnt know Exclusion/ racism not allowed going to school with Germans, and all the things she couldnt do because she was a Jew. Racism the stars on them. Exclusion jobs, not going to one school, and all Jews had to be hone by 8 oclock Isolation (Annex) isolates her self from everything going on in the Annex, also when shes put into the Annex Reality of War having to deal with the things in the world, also knowing that at any second a bomb could go off or someone could find her and take her to a concentration camp, it takes away her safety. Psychological and Physical Changes Psychological makes her lonely, also stepping away from her family. Physical need for nurturing and growing up and become mature. Conflicts Man vs. Self Anne normal maturity process of adolescence. When we see her first enter the annex she is still emotional. She wants freedom and independence, but its taken away by her being placed in the Annex. Man vs. Society (World War II) Anne struggles with the war, going into hiding. Germany invading Holland and having the weight of being caught at any second of the day, and being taken away by Hitler on her shoulders. Having to deal with the sound air raids and bombing all day and every day.

Man vs. Man Living somewhere shes trapped (Secret Annex), shes trapped were she cant express herself. Which leads to the Annex taking away the ability to be herself. Like sharing a room with Mr. Dussel. The only things she can do are read, study, write in her diary, listen to the radio, and do chores. Her personality (talkative and loud) is annoying to the adults, and she cant show her true personality. Also having to deal with the adults arguing. Themes Coming of Age Anne struggles with normal teenager things. Wanting more privacy, dealing with her trying to find her identity? Thinking about her future, thinking about what she will do when the war ends.

Also having to deal with that fact that most of her friends are died, also the fact that she is a teenager and is selfish, but stuck in a place were she cant be (Annex). Having to pretend to be a young mature woman for her parents, when she knows her not. However, right before she is taken, we see her respect who she is as a person, and who she has become in 2 years in the Annex.

Identity She trying to figure out why people in the outside world hate her. What does it mean to Anne, being hated just because shes Jewish, and how does she feel and that. Going over these questions have her become the person she is saying that she will be o.k. if not everyone likes her.

Anti-Semitism and War (Hatred of Jews) This anti-Semitism that makes the Frank family goes into hiding. The idea of hating Jews goes throughout the whole book. The question why does these people hate me? Is a question that comes up often? This diary is a testament against the hatred and antiSemitism that causes her death. Throughout the dairy the phrase After the war. Is an unfulfilled wish within everyone in the Annex? Towards the end of the book Anne documents all the wars, this shows Anne hope towards the end to get out of the Annex and have a normal life.

The idea of love is seen throughout this story, some places you see it is: Otto Frank (Father) shows us that he is a sensitive man. Tries to protect his family by bringing them to the Annex. As well as keeping Margot and Anne life as normal as possible. Hes also the peace maker in the Annex.

We also see it in when people bring them food and risk there life, as well as people caring for each other. We also see the idea of love when Mr. Frank welcomes the Van Dann family into the Annex. Another way we see it is how Cufeus and Frailer risk there life to keep the people in the Annex a secret. Characters Anne Frank German- Jewish origin, youngest in the Frank family. Over the course of the diary she grows from a young 13 year old into a mature and young 15 year old. Although she had very little politics in this book, she questions Anti-Semitism and war. After Anne is discovered, she goes to the concentration camp in Belsen in Germany, were she dies before her 16th birthday. Margot Frank Older sister to Anne; 16 years old, when diary begins, very quiet, shy, humble. And eager to please adults. Often clashes with her sister because of the age difference. It is Margot who suppose to be taken by the Germans and this is why they went into hiding. She dies a few weeks after Anne in the same concentration camp.

Mrs. Frank Comes from a wealthy family and had spent most of her life in Germany, as a mother she is a failure to Anne, but not Margot because shes not affectionate. She is the voice of reason. When she is taken from the Annex, she is left to die at Auschwitz. Mr. Frank Father of Margot and Anne also came from a wealthy family. When Hitler came to power he decided to take him family to Amsterdam. There he worked in a food produce business. Annes favorite and sometimes calls him Pim. Only person alive from the Annex and died in the 1980s. Mr. Van Dann Business associate of Mr. Frank. He arranged to live with the frank in the Annex. Anne considers him to be a know-it-all and was also gases in Auschwitz. Mrs. Van Dann German, she doesnt speak Dutch very well and not humble. Anne finds her the most annoying resident in the Annex and really hates when she flirts with Otto Frank, and also died in Belsen. Peter Van Dann Only son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Dann, almost 16 when he comes into the Annex. He is shy and begins a deep relationship with Anne. At first Anne is head-over-heals with him and realizes he just a nice that is weak-minded and has no character. He disappears in a forced march with the German Army. Albert Dussel An elder dentist who lives in the Annex. His wife managed to escape. Stays in the same room as Anne and drives her crazy, he can be petty and small minded. He dies in a camp in Germany call Neuengamme.

Mr. Coophius An associate of Mr. Frank and arranges them to live in the Annex. Provides them food and keeps them a secret for 2 years. He is captures with the Franks and the Van Dann and realized because of his health problems.

Mr. Kraler An associate who also arranged them to live in the Annex. He is also arrested for his role in helping the Annex residents and spends 8 months in a labor camp. Lies Annes school friend, this is the girl Anne has visions of being in concentration camps. She imagines that its her. When Anne was sent to Belsen, Anne found Lies, and they were happy to suffer together.
