Beginning, Middle, and End Subject Area: Language Arts Grade Level: 1st Grade

I.

Michigan Content Standards R.NT.01.03 identify problem/solution, sequence of events, and sense of story (beginning, middle, and end). R.CM.01.02 retell in sequence up to three important ideas and details of familiar simple oral and written text.

II.

Objective I can retell what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of Miss Hens Feast I can make a BME book including at least one event describing the beginning, middle, and end of their self-selected reading book

III.

Anticipatory Set TTW begin by telling the students that they will be thinking about the beginning, middle, and end of Miss Hens Feast,(the leveled reader we have been reading) just like we have been thinking about writing our stories with a beginning, middle, and end. Input A. Task Analysis a. The learner needs to have read Miss Hens Feast by Lydia McBeigh and illustrated by Nancy Cote, a Houghton Mifflin Leveled Reader b. The learner needs to know that we have been thinking about writing with a beginning, middle, and end while writing our personal narratives c. The learners needs to have read his or her partners SSR book d. Procedure i. Anticipatory Set 1. TTW ask the students what the class has been thinking about while writing personal narratives 2. TTW tell the students that they will be thinking about the beginning, middle, and end of Miss Hens Feast ii. TTW make a beginning, middle, and end chart on the board iii. TTW ask the students what happens in the beginning of a story (introduces character, problem, hooks reader,) the middle (climax, the action) and the end (solution or general conclusion if there is no problem) iv. TTW ask the students what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of Miss Hens Feast

v. TSW tell the teacher what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story as the teacher writes the information in the correct column on the board vi. TTW ask the student to summarize what happened in Miss Hens Feast vii. TSW summarize what happens during the beginning, middle, and end of Miss Hens Feast, using at least three events viii. TSW work with the teacher to put the information from the beginning, middle, and end chart and putting it into a BME book ix. TTW put a B on the first page and write the first event, a M on the second page and write the event from the middle, and an E on the last page and write the last event x. TSW independently make their own BME book using their selfselected reading book xi. TSW include at least one event for each the beginning, the middle, and the end xii. TSW discuss their BME book with their reading partner xiii. TSW check their partners BME book and agree or disagree about whether or not their partner has include the beginning, the middle, and the end from his or her self-selected reading book xiv. TTW monitor the students work and check for understanding xv. TTW collect the students BME books B. Thinking Levels a.
