This competition is intended to help you develop public speaking skills. This sheet explains some aspects of public speaking as well as what is expected for your grade. This speech is worth 60 points. Please put time and effort into it as the ability to speak publicly is one of the most useful skills you can acquire. The topic is your choice, though I encourage you to develop a speech on something you feel strongly

Category and Expectations


Topic and Length. Student has a well-chosen topic reflecting good thought
and consideration and speech is at least 3-5 minutes long.

Development. Writings shows a fluidity which does not interfere with


spoken delivery. Topic has good support and substantial arguments. Points brought up are relevant and pertinent and there is no extraneous information. The speech is direct and effective.

Poise and Presence. Student stands erect with head up and displays
minimal hand movements. Student is not slouching and continually makes eye contact with the audience. Student is confident and in control.

Delivery. Student speaks confidently and voice has intonations to show stress
and emotion. There is nothing worse, regardless of the topic, than a monotone speaker.

Content. Student uses devices that are original and appeal to the audience.
For instance, some speakers refer to members of the audience in their speech in order to draw them in. Others use small stories to elaborate their point, still others will use thought provoking examples to illustrate their ideas. Whatever your device, be original and strike a cord of recognition with your audience.

Refinement. Student speaks fluently and does not litter speak with
unnecessary noises such as um or like. The speech shows refinement and practice.
