English Department Philosophy

The English curriculum at Fryeburg Academy is a writing-based, systematic accumulation of skills promoting the development of thought, comprehension and communication through responses to literature and topics of classroom discussion. In order to enable our students to engage in the benefits and obligations of our culture and democracy, students are encouraged to explore their own perceptions and are guided in learning how to write, listen, view, and speak effectively. Students read literature appropriate to their abilities and requirements and learn to synthesize and construct meanings appropriate to their development as independent, critical thinkers and writers. The English curriculum is designed to develop the skills requisite for organized and comprehensive writing, expressing their thoughts with clarity, and to foster understanding and appreciation of the English language, literary genres, literary traditions and literal and figurative interpretations in objective and subjective capacities. The curriculum also focuses on enabling students to think and facilitating lifelong learning in all areas of study.
