SOFTWARE FOR VECTOR REPRESENTATION OF EXPERIMENTAL
PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION OVER A PROFILE
One of the main tasks of wind tunnel testing is the increase of test informativeness.
That is why an extensive set of parameters is usually determined in each particular test
run. Up-to-date testing procedures permit to observe results of measurements in the form
of plots of respective parameters in the course of experiment, which give the
experimenter the better understanding of obtained data.
In NAU at Aerodynamic Facility for Interdisciplinary Researches (AFIR) wind
tunnel testing of profiles are performed aimed on development of advanced methods of
boundary layer control. In these tests measurements of lift, drag and pitch moment
coefficients are combined with static pressure measurements on the model surface in a
number of points. All measurements are performed in sequence for two cases: for
reference case with no boundary layer control is applied, and for controlled one.
Software, which controlled the course of experiment, permitted on-line plotting of
aerodynamic coefficients for both cases but not pressure distribution over the model. But
it was found that pressure distribution is more informative parameter than aerodynamic
coefficients. The task was set to develop software for graphical representation of
pressure distribution over the model in the course of test.
Two forms of pressure distribution plotting are known: scalar form where pressure
coefficients are plotted versus chord position in Cartesian coordinates and vector form,
where pressure coefficients are represented as set of vectors normal to profile surface in
particular points. The latter is more suitable for analysis and this has been chosen for
implementation. Another requirement is the possibility to draw pressure distribution for
any tabular presentation of arbitrary profile.
Developed software performs approximation of profile shape and calculation of
directions of perpendiculars to the surface in specified points, scaling measured pressure
data and drawing profile contour on the plot. In each specified point on the profile
vector representing pressure coefficient is placed and envelope curve is built for both
reference and controlled case. Software has been created in Matlab package to provide
compatibility and integration into existing software. Separate graphic user interface has
been created to provide extensive post-experimental analysis of obtained data which are
read from file created during test run.
