CANDY IS DANDY Excel Project

You are going to conduct some market research about Starburst Jelly Beans. Before we open any bag of candy, take a guess about the colors you expect to find. Ask yourself: a. Do bags of equal weight have an identical number of candies? b. Are all colors represented equally, or are some more popular than others? c. Does color distribution remain constant?

Step 1: Create a Worksheet

1. Open an Excel spreadsheet. In cell A1, type the title Candy is Dandy!

2. In row 3, beginning cell A3, type the following headings. (COLORS and AMOUNT) 3. In column A, beginning in cell A4, list all the colors or flavors of the jelly beans you found in each bag. (Lime, Grape, Strawberry, Orange, Lemon) 4. Sort the list alphabetically: Highlight the cells that contain colors not the column header. On the Home Tab, click Start, choose A to Z. Type Total in the cell below your last entry. 5. Now you can format your worksheet in a variety of ways. Highlight your worksheet and click Format as Table, from the styles section of the home tab. Choose whatever format you like.

Step 2: Add Formulas

1. Enter the number of same-color Starburst in the corresponding cell. Use the AutoSum function to total your columns. REMEMBER YOU CAN USE THE FILL HANDLE TO CLICK AND DRAG YOUR FORMULAS ACROSS YOUR SPREADSHEET. 2. Now you can automatically calculate the average number of each color per bag. 3. Interpret your data. Are some colors more numerous? Do all bags have the same number of candies? Compare your observations with the findings of other students. Are the same colors more numerous from one group to another?

Step 3: Create graphs

1. Highlight your spreadsheet and create a pie chart from the Insert tab. 2. Change the chart and graph styles and the colors in the objects. Eat your Skittles! Save as: Candy Your Name and upload to moodle.
