Common Core Standards M1.0A.1 Add and subtract within 20, to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknown in all positions. M1.0A.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Objectives/Students will Develop an understanding of addition vocabulary. Make sense of addition problems. Demonstrate various strategies to solve addition problems. Create an addition word problem and show their problem solving strategy. Use the reading strategy of cross checking.

Community Resources: Met with public librarian to discuss and review lesson plan. The Mission of Addition by Brian Cleary was checked out from the public library.

Procedure (Learning Activities): Whole group-Teacher will review counting with ten frames. Students will take turns identifying how many dots they see. (Teacher directed) Teacher will read aloud The Mission of Addition by Brian Cleary. Teach addition vocabulary. (Add, put together, altogether) (teacher-directed)-Background

Knowledge Teacher will introduce addition through gumball math on the Starboard. Each student will be given a gumball to chew throughout the lesson as a thinking tool. Students will use the reading strategy of cross checking when reading story problems to ask themselves: Does it look right?, does it sound right?, does it make sense? Teacher will teach hand gestures to go along with self questioning. (Student-centered) Reading Strategy Each student will work out addition story problems on their own gumball work mats with pom poms.(Student-centered) Teacher will ask for students to share their strategies in solving the addition problems. Students will take turns coming up to the Starboard and showing their strategy by putting the gumballs in the machine. (Student-centered) Lesson will conclude with students writing their own bubblegum math problem and drawing gumballs to represent their answer. (Problem-solving)

Teacher will present subtraction word problem on the Starboard. Students will choose tools and work out the problem. Teacher will encourage students to share their strategies. Discuss subtraction vocabulary. Whole group brainstorm.(minus, take away, take apart, how many are left) ---Background Knowledge

Students will be placed in groups of 5 to play Hot Chocolate Math. They will be given marshmallows to use as manipulatives. Students will be encouraged to discuss their strategies and check their answers with their teammates. Lesson will conclude with students writing their own marshmallow math problem and showing how they solved by gluing on marshmallows.
