2BBE Decision Making: Failure to Launch

March 16, 2012 Professor Castro

1. Does The Bird Problem present Kit and Ace with a programmed or non-programmed decision? What features of their decision problem led to your choice? The bird problem that was stated presents a non-programmed decision because non-programmed decisions are unique decisions that require a 'custom made' solution. This is when a manager or the leader of the group is confronted with an ill-structured or novel problem and there is no 'cut and dried solution'. The creation of a marketing strategy for a new service represents an example of a non-programmed decision which led me to the conclusion that what Kit and Ace have agreed upon is not an everyday decision rather they have to think about it thoroughly and implement it and theres no taking it back. 2. Assess the degree of certainty or uncertainty that Kit and Ace face in this decision problem. What factors set the degree of certainty or uncertainty? On the introductory part of the problem, Kit and Ace present themselves with a high percentage of certainty since they are really convinced that they should kill the bird especially Kit. But right after they shot the bird you can see that they had a change of heart, for Kit and Ace panicked and ran and went straight to the bird to help instead of savoring a moment of joy and contentment since they have once and for all killed the bird that annoyed Kit for a very long time. 3. Review the earlier section describing the decision-making steps. Which of those steps appears in The Bird Problem? Note the examples of each step that you see. The following are the steps that were present in the Bird Problem: Recognize the problem and the need for a decision Kit and Ace talked about the chirping bird. Ace suggested that he has a gun and that they could use it on the bird. Identify the objective of the decision Kit and Aces main objective is to silence the bird. Select the best course of action Kit and Ace have agreed to the need to shot the bird. Implement the decision Ace shot the bird.

1. This chapter defined a group as two or more people having common interests, objectives, and continuing interaction. Does this film sequence have examples of each part of that definition? Identify this film sequence have examples of each part of that definition? Identify specific moments that fit the definition.

The film does not only present two people sharing a common interest rather two characters complimenting the same product with the same name. So for me, its a yes.

2. Review the section Stages of Group Development. Apply that discussion to both film sequences. You should see examples of each stage.

Forming- When the two characters first met and was surprised to discover that they have the same name. Storming When Aaron told the other Aaron that he bears no child. Norming Both Aaron have agreed that they will be comfortable with each other. Performing When the two Aarons got close and became good friends. Adjourning The two were glad that they have established good friendship amongst each other.

3. Does the small group in these film sequences appear cohesive? Cite some specific moments from the film sequences to support your conclusion. Yes because the characters were easily connected and comfortable with each other, and discovered afterwards that they share common interests.

Fanila, Riza Joyce S. 2BBE Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins

1. Based on your understanding of a team as described in this chapter, do Roscoe Jenkins and his brother Sheri Otis Jenkins form a team in this lm sequence? Why or why not? Personally I dont think that the Jenkins brothers made a good team in the film. One they were not open with each other, they suffer family problems and their personalities clashes every time. Also when Roscoe stayed with his family, it wasnt good for his selfesteem since he had suffered a lot of humiliation. I have learned in Management 02 this semester that a good team compliments or brings out the best in one another. 2. Does this film sequence show functional or dysfunctional conflict? Give some examples from the sequence.

This film presents a dysfunctional conflict, there were many instances where conflicts were not resolved and were not explained well. It hinders the total output of the group performance and since the brothers does not make a good team for specifically there was a decline in communication they were not able to achieve top outcome.

3. Which conflict management style best fits the behavior shown in this film sequence? Give some examples from the sequence.

I think the conflict management style that best fits the behavior shown in this film sequence is forcing. He should use his formal authority in his family or other power that he possess to satisfy his concerns without regard to the concerns of the party that you are in conflict with.

Fanila, Riza Joyce S. 2BBE Power and Political

March 16, 2012 Professor Castro

1. This chapter defined power as The ability to influence someone else who has the power in this film scene? It was a college engineering professor named Robert Kearns who influences many people in different aspects of life. In the film, Robert Kearns left eye is almost completely blind.

2. What is the authority of influence? In the film what can you say who influence what scene? For me the authority of influence is the ability to convince and persuade others by the things you do with your everyday life without having to brag it in their face and the principles that you believe in. Even if Robert Kearns is almost blind, it did not hinder him from experimenting and doing inventions at his basement, he didnt let his disability dictate what he will be and sit did not stop him from achieving what he wants. 3. What would be one of the types of interpersonal power in the film? Robert Kearns, the main character in the film showed a principle based power. Principle based power is the most powerful and long-lasting type of interpersonal power, because it is based on a common belief. Although Kearns is physically handicapped, he still believes that he can be whatever he wanted in life. He did not let his disability stop him.

1. In what ways is Ingvar Kamprad a manager? In what ways is he a leader? Ingvar Kamprad as stated in the earlier study, showed that he remained very active in running IKEA even though he has already relinquished his position as CEO. Kamprad demonstrated and showed a personality of a strong and a committed leader, for even though he already has no position in the company it did not stop him from helping out. He sets a good example and is objective about things.

2. Describe the nature of followership that Kamprad seems to have encouraged at Ikea. Ingvar Kamprad is a person who is caring and is satisfied with what he has. People at Ikea seemed to be encouraged by their past leader for he cares about people and checks on
how theyre doing. He is empathetic and understanding. When we think about leadership, we tend to focus almost entirely on the leader. Yet without followers, there is no leader. Leadership is participatory: leaders and followers exist in a mutually beneficial relationship where each adds to the effectiveness of the other.

3. Using the Leadership Grid and its underlying leader behaviors of initiating structure and consideration, explain the leadership orientation of Ingvar Kamprad.

4. Use the concepts of transactional, transformational, charismatic, and authentic leaders to describe the leadership of Ingvar Kamprad. 5. What are the key leadership lessons provided by Kamprads experiences?

6. What skills would you personally need to develop or refine to become a leader like Kamprad? What could you do to develop or refine these skills?
