Q & a SeCTION
In this issue of the bulletin we have an interview with Dr Imran Hassam on both the Physical and mental benefits of fasting. 1. as an individual how has fasting helped you in your life physically and mentally? The month of Ramadhan has always been one of my best Islamic months for as long as i can remember. Staying without Water and Food somehow for me has always done the opposite - it always serves to rejuvenate me, Ramadhan is like a tall glass of cold water in a parched desert as far as i am concerned. Mentally fasting instils patience, teaches self control and discipline not only from those acts that may invalidate the fast but even from those other acts that are sinful though they may not invalidate my fast such as back biting etc. I have always noticed that when in state of fasting one becomes more attuned to other aspects of his life, more careful of not only of his actions but also reins in his thoughts and tries to maintain better control over it. That for me is the pinnacle in definition of control. 2. as an individual how has fasting helped you in your life with regards to appreciating your creator? Walk a mile in another persons shoes and only then will one truly understand the others trials and tribulations. It is similar with Fasting, fasting makes us all to come face to face with hunger and feel the pangs of thirst. It changes one from merely sympathizing with the situation of the poor, to empathizing. Nothing opens your eyes wider than tasting a small portion of what the unfortunate have to go through every day of their lives. This not only makes us more open towards charity but also reminds us to be forever thankful to Allah (swt) for the many tidings he has made available in our lives. 3. Do you think that the youths have enough knowledge about fasting when it comes to the month of Ramadhan? Youths are called youths for the very reason that they are still in the process of growing up and learning. I think our community through its madrasah, group emails and lectures at mosque does a lot to empower the youths with the information to comprehend this Holy Month. But as it is said learning never stops, and it shouldnt. So coming back to your question - do our Youths have enough knowledge about fasting? I think let alone the youth, there can never be enough knowledge for both the adults and the youths alike when it comes to understanding and acquiring more knowledge concerning Ramadhan. 4. What do you think should be done to strengthen the youths in terms of spiritual upliftment and physical abilities when it comes to fasting? I have always believed that there is no better follower than the one who understands and truly believes in what he does. Therein lies my answer, the best way to strengthen the youths in terms of their spirituality is through education and allowing them to understand what Ramadhan and fasting is all about.
Whoever relies on the excellence of Allahs choices, doesnt wish to be in other than the situation that Allah has chosen for him.- Imam Hassan(a.s)

The month of holy Ramadan, besides being the month of worship and Divine blessings, carries a historical importance as well. As already mentioned above, the revelations of the Holy Quran commenced in this month. The epoch-making Battle of Badr and the Conquest of Makkah also took place during the holy month of Ramadan. Ramadhan, according to some traditions is one of Allahs names. This is why we cannot say Ramadhan without making it clear that we are talking about the month, and therefore we should always say the month of Ramadhan. Commander of the faithful, Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb (A.S.) said: Do not say Ramadan, but say the month of Ramadhan. For you do not know what Ramadan is? This same meaning was referred to by Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) in his speech during Shaaban: The month of Allah (SWT) is coming... Let us: 1. 2. 3. 4. MOON LIGhT IS ReFLeCTeD LIGhT!!
It is very well known that the moons light is reflected light and that it gets its light from the sun. The easiest way to prove this is by lunar eclipses. This has also been observed by the Quran 1400 years ago even before the telescope was made. This before scientists researched the moons light and also concluded that its light is reflected. In suratun Naba ayah number 12-13 says: Did you see how Allah created seven heavens, one above the other, and made in the moon a light and the sun a lamp? In this verse the moon is referred to as muneer which in Arabic dictionary means borrowed light or reflected light and the sun is referred to as siraaj in which from the Arabic dictionary this word means lamp, further more meaning an object that makes its own light. Another verse to prove this is in Suratul Furqan verse number 61. It says: Blessed is he who made constellations in the skies, and place there in a lamp (the sun) and a moon reflecting light. This verse without a doubt clearly states it. The Quran is truly a magnificent book and very beneficial too !!

BIBI KhaDIJa(a.S)
Bibi Khadija, daughter of Khuwayled was born in Makka, was the first wife of our Holy Prophet (saw). Bibi Khadijas parents both died when she was only an infant and so when she grew up, she took over the family business and was the one who expanded the business. The profit she made was used in helping the poor, needy and wayfarers. She was known as the princess of Arabia because of her wealth, but possessed the best of qualitie, such that the Arabs called her Tahira (the pure one). She got many proposals from wealthy princes but refused to all of them as she was looking at their qualities rather than the wealth the men possessed. Once, she was looking for a person to be in charge of one of her caravans. Hazrat AbuTalib suggested Prophet Mohammed, his nephews name. Our Holy Prophet was chosen for taking the charge and it resulted in a great success! Bibi Khadijas slave, Maysara who was also present with the Holy Prophet, praised his qualities such that Bibi Khadija became his admirer. She sent a proposal to Prophet who agreed to this. The nikah was recited by Hazrat Abu talib and Waraqa (B. Khadijas cousin). Their first child was called Qasim and the second, Abdullah. Both died in infancy. Then Hazrat Fatima Zahra(pbuh) was born, who became the leader of all women. Bibi Khadijah helped keep the name of Islam by being the financial provider throughout all times. She sacrificed all her money to such an extent, that the Holy Prophet did not have money to buy her a Kafan during her burial. Bibi Khadija died on the 10th Ramadhan 619 AD, the same year as the death of HAzrat Abu Talib. Hence the Holy Prophet named this year as the year of Huzn Amul Huzn. Muslims may forget the worth and sacrifice of Khadijah, but Islam cannot ever forget or repay this debt. She was the protector of Islam during its infancy! May we become as dedicated as she was to Islam. Amen. Sarah Somji

DOMS. My answer is that if a particular muscle group still hurts, resistance training exercises should not be performed for it. This doesnt mean you cant exercise. If the muscles of the chest are sore you could focus your workout on your back muscles, perhaps. Also, if you are experiencing DOMS cardiovascular exercise may be a good option, as long as it does not cause more pain. While DOMS is typically a normal and healthy reaction to exercise, there are times when DOMS may be an indication of too much stress on the body. DOMS does not necessarily indicate a good workout. If you still feel significant soreness 72 hours after your workout you may want to consider reducing the intensity of your next workout and gradually build back up. More pain from DOMS does not necessarily mean more progress. In the long run your progress will be better if you gradually build up, rather than pushing yourself too hard at once. This can lead to burn out, and even injuries. DOMS is a part of physical fitness that shouldnt prevent you from regular exercise. It can provide us with some feedback by letting us know that we did something the body isnt used to, or possibly that we took a workout too far. Listen to your body, let it rest and recover from workouts, gradually increase the intensity of your workouts, and your progress will be remarkable. CaLLIGRaPhY COMPeTITION This competition is open to all ages. To participate you have to make a handwritten calligraphy on any one of the Aimmah(A.S). Male participants can submit their entries to Aamir Kanji 0655-500305 Female participants can submit their entries to Fatimbai Somji. The Deadline for this event is on the 30th of August Fabulous prizes to be awarded.

YaWMUL QUDS
Juma (Friday) Speech by Sayed Mahmood Madani on 3rd September, 2010 Praises and thanks are to the God who is The Sufficient for a person who seeks His help. And, He guides the one who asks to be guided. And peace is upon Muhammad and His Ahlul-Bayt and curses are upon their enemies. Virtuous I advice you and myself primarily to be pious. There is no savior other than piety. Prophet Muhammad said: Allah does not look at your status, lineage or physical characteristics or wealth. However, he looks at your heart and favors those amongst you who have more piety. Ideal Fast: We have been discussing regarding the characteristics of an ideal fast since the beginning of Ramadhan. This is the last week of Ramadhan, right now we are passing through the best times during the best days in the best month. The most important characteristic to gain the full purpose of a fast is piety. Moreover, the fast which builds piety and in which one refrains from sins is the most preferred fast. The fast which doesnt transform ones character and mentality is a temporary and weak fast which has no benefit. Allah says: We have prescribed fasting upon you, so that you may achieve piety. Additionally we should ponder over the positive impacts of fasting on our actions, if there is a positive effect we should thank God and if the impacts are negative then we should persevere in gaining positive effects from our fasts by improving our mentality, repetition of our beliefs, seeking help from Allah and connection with our 14 infallibles. event: We are in a day which Imam Khomeini named Yawmul Quds or the Day of Quds. Imam Khomeini named the last Friday of every Ramadhan as Yawmul Quds with the following Purposes: 1. In order to unite the entire Muslim Ummah all over the world, to unite and fight against the common enemy. Whereas the opposition have worldwide reputation, therefore the Muslims around the world must unite and put their differences aside and fight against our enemies and not between ourselves as this results in the weakness of Muslim community on the whole, and follow the words of The Holy Quran, and obey Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: For Allah is with those who patiently persevere (8:46)}. Its must on all the groups to try to gain this status. Therefore Yawmul Quds must be a day of unity, a day of kindness, a day of brotherhood between Muslim Ummah as the Holy Quran says: {Muhammad is the Messenger of God; and those who are with him are strong against Unbelievers, (but) compassionate amongst each other. Thou wilt see them bow and prostrate themselves (in prayer), seeking Grace from God and (His) Good Pleasure (48:29)} 2. Imam Khomeini reminds that Israel is not only against Palestine but a Fitna against the respect of Islam and people all over the world. Israel wants to occupy the area between river of Nile and river of Euphrates rather wants to occupy all the wealth of the Middle East specially petroleum, which flows in the industry like blood in the body.

Laylatul Qadr.
The month of Ramadhan has been singled out for special worship (`Ibadah) and exclusive favors. It is a month unlike no other month. One reason for this, as defined by the Quran, is because the Holy Quran was revealed in this month. Allah says in Sura al-Baqarah: The month of Ramadhan, that in which the Quran was sent down; a guidance for mankind, and clear signs of guidance and distinction (2:185). In fact, according to a hadith of the 6th Imam, the other holy books were also revealed in this month. Among the nights of Ramadhan is one special night, which is better than a thousand months (Holy Quran 97:3). Good deeds performed on that single night are equal to those performed over a thousand months. It is the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr), when the Quran was revealed. Laylatul Qadr is a celebration to commemorate the arrival of the final guidance for humans. It is a tribute to the commencement of the message revealed to mankind by their creator, a message which shows them the way to achieve happiness in both the worlds. Just as the arrival of a child is celebrated, on its birth and then every year, as a bringer of joy and fulfilment for the family, Laylatul Qadr is celebrated as a bringer of light and guidance for mankind. Unlike the birthday which is celebrated with a feast for the senses, Laylatul Qadr includes a feast for the spirit, a feast of worship and prayers. Some Ahadith indicate that the fate of every believer for the coming year is decreed on this night. That is why the Du`as for this night ask for special favors in the decree for the year. Believers are encouraged to stay awake the entire night, and pray for blessings and forgiveness. It is the holiest night of the year, and it would be unwise to be heedless of the tremendous benefits of this night. What do we therefore have to remind ourselves about Laylatul Qadr? That it is: A unique once in a year opportunity to do a lifetime worth of activity. Full of long lasting blessings The night of unsurpassed grandeur when the Allah revealed the Quran through the Wahy Jibrael into the heart of the Grand Holy Prophet (SAW)
A blessing is trial, if gratitude is shown for it, it becomes a blessing, and if you show ingratitude for it then it becomes a wrath.-Imam Hassan(a.s)

A once in a year occasion for influencing our future destiny - QADR - Taqdeer. The Masumeen(AS) have explained to us that Allah(SWT) in his infinite wisdom has planned the system of the universe in such a way that every persons destiny will be determined on a yearly basis in the angelic spheres through the agency of the imam of the age. Who is the leader and focus of the whole spiritual world) this gives MANKIND a unique opportunity to influence his own future (gains, loss/health/sickness, richness/poverty/ etc by performing certain acts, e.g. Dua, salaah, sadaqah, jihad, acquiring knowledge, Quran recitation etc. The night when the whole multitude of angels descend on earth, greeting and praying for the believers and conveying messages to the Imam of age. how to prepare oneself for The Night of Power (Laylatul-Qadr) Strive to keep Allah (SWT) at the fore of ones mind the whole night long. For worshipping in this night a suitable place, dress, and perfume should be arranged in advance (comfortable dress which does not distract us) Paying alms during this night - to the people who really deserve financial support Ask for forgiveness of past sins in the most appealing manner with a promise to try never to return to the sins again - a TAWBA in every sense of the word Present ones requests before the Almighty with full hope that they will be answered. The Prophet (S.A.W.) when asked what one should invoke Allah during these nights, said: Ask for your safety (here and in the hereafter). Let us all pray, that we may be granted the Maghferah on this auspicious Month, and that we may earn the Pleasure of Allah (SWT) in such a manner that our lives take a positive turn in a manner that we may earn the salvation for both this world and the Hereafter. Kumail Abbas Yusufali

SaLaTUL LaYL
Salatul-Layl is made up of eleven Rakats. The benefits of this namaz are numerous, both in this world and the hereafter. The first eight Rakats are prayed as normal in pairs of two Rakats each with the niyyah of Nawafilatul-Layl. The next two Rakats are prayed with the Niyyah of Salatul Shafa. The remaining one Rakat is prayed with the Niyyah of Salatul Witr. In the last one Rakat, Qunoot is recited before Rukuu and the Salat is completed as usual with Tashahud and Salaam. The last one Rakat is prayed as follows: Hold Tasbih in the right hand if required for keeping count of the dhikr mentioned below to be recited. Make Niyyah and say Takbiratul Ihram. Recite: Surah Al-Hamd; Surah Qul Huwallahu Ahad - three times; Surah Qul-Audhubi Rabbil Falaq - once; Surah Qul-Audhubi Rabbin Naas - once. Note: If one does not know the last two Surahs mentioned above, then it is sufficient to recite Surah Qul Huwallahu Ahad, three times. Say Takbir and raise both hands for Qunoot.:You may recite any Dua. However, it is recommended to recite the following Dua:
There is none worth worshipping but Allah Who is Forbearing and Generous. There is none worth worshipping but Allah Who is Most High and Great Glory be to Allah, Who is the Sustainer of the seven heavens and of the seven earth And Who is the Sustainer of all the things in them, and between them, And Who is the Lord of the great Arsh (Divine Center of Authority & Power) And all praise for Allah, the Sustainer of the worlds.
He was perceived weak, but at time of struggle he was a fierce lion. In the gathering of scholars, he was more eager to observe silence than speak. Even if he could be exceeded in speaking, he could not be excelled in silence.-Imam Hassan(a,s)
24
Then, while holding the Tasbih in the right hand, raise the left hand and pray for forgiveness of forty [40] or more Mumineen/Muminaat are either dead or living in the following manner: Allaahummagh Firli (Name) O allah, forgive giving the names of Mumineen/Muminaat. Continuing with the Qunoot, while still raising the left hand, recite the following Istighfar seventy [70] times: astaghfirullah Rabbi wa atuubu Ilayh I seek forgiveness of allah my Lord and I turn to him Still continuing further while raising the left hand, recite the following Dua seven [7] times: haadhaa Maqaamul aaidhi Bika Minannaar This is the position of one who seeks refuge in You from the fire [of hell] Continuing yet further while still raising the left hand, recite three hundred [300] times: Al-Afwa (I ask for) forgiveness Following this, the following should be said once: Rabbigfirli warhamni wa tubalaiyyi,Innaka tawwaburrahim Lord, please forgive me and have mercy upon me and turn back towards me. Verily You are the Oft-Turning back, Most Merciful Finally, complete the Salat in the normal way by going to Rukuu followed by Sajdah, Tashahud and Salaam, ending Salatul-Layl. As a Takibaat after the Salat, recite: Tasbih of Janabe Fatemah Zahra (a.s.), followed by Sajdah of Shukr. Next, recite Ayatul Kursi & Finally, for the second time, perform Sajdah of Shukr, completing the Salat.
Proximate is the one that is drawn closer by affection, even though he is a distant relation. And the one that is far is the one that affection distances him, even though he is a close relation. Imam Hassan(as)
25
The annihilation of people lies in three things: Arrogance, Greed and envy. Arrogance causes destruction of the religion and because of it Satan was cursed, and Greed is the enemy of ones soul, and envy is the guide to wickedness and because of it Qabil killed Habil.
26
But fasting should have its regulations too, and not simply the in orderly skipping meals, that is bound to harm health and stamina, rather than improving them. Here again Islam provides the answer, and in order to realize the benefits of fasting, it recommends the late midnight meals called Sahar (before the formal start of a fast) and the breaking of the fast at the time prescribed. Of course, to ensure good health one should abstain from gluttony after breaking fast. Moderation: It is difficult to identify the moderation in the desires for food and sex because of the different needs and energies of individuals. Moderation of an individual may be considered as exaggeration or shortage for another. The relative moderation is to have only the quantity that is sufficient, away from greed and fill. The best criterion in this regard is that which was stated by Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS): Son! May I instruct you four words after which you will no longer need medicine? Do not eat unless you are hungry. Stop eating while you are still hungry. Chew food deliberately. Before sleeping, go to toilet. You will not need medicine if you follow. In the holy Quran, there is a Verse gathering the whole matter of medicine. It is: ...Eat and drink but do not be excessive. (7:31)
If you fail to obtain something of worldly benefit, take it as if the thought of it had never crossed your mind at all.-Imam Hassan(AS)
