Neuburger Eng Comp 102-102 15 February 2012 Essay Response A Case of Assisted Suicide A Case of Assisted Suicide is an essay written by Jack Kevorkian depicting the first use of his death machine to assist in the suicide of Janet Adkins. In his essay, Kevorkian comes across as overly critical of his opponents in his quest to justify his actions, instead of fostering sympathy with his readers. When criticized for his use of a rusty 1968 camper as the site of the assisted suicide, he responds, But carping critics missed the point: the essence and significance of the event are far more important (320). Kevorkian seems surprised that there would be critics to a new and as of yet unofficially unrecognized specialty (320) or the fact that what he was doing is illegal. In the very next paragraph he accuses his critics of dishonesty after being criticized for having assisted a patient after a short personal acquaintance of two days (320). Instead of using this excerpt to persuade his readers, Kevorkian lashes out against his critics without taking their position into consideration. Kevorkian lets himself get sidetracked by his critics instead of focusing on the wellbeing of his patients as well as educating the public. (201)
